Broadcom(R) 'Combo' Chip Solutions Enable OEMs to Add Bluetooth(R), GPS and FM Radio to Greater Numbers of Cellular Phones.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, announced that its Bluetooth®, GPS and FM radio combination ('combo') chip has been selected by Samsung to provide navigation, location based services and key connectivity functionality in a number of new handsets now available. The new Samsung handsets that integrate the Broadcom® InConcert® BCM2075 combo chip include the innovative Blue Earth (GT-S7550) handset, as well as the Corby Pro (GT-B5310).

The Broadcom BCM2075 combo chip integrates three radios (Bluetooth, GPS and FM), and in conjunction with its unique InConcert collaborative co-existence technology, allows these radios to operate simultaneously, and with minimal interference, providing a more compelling user experience. In addition, this connectivity processor offloads many of the communications functions that are usually performed by the host, saving the host's operation for more computationally-intensive applications. Broadcom will demonstrate its BCM2075 combo chip at next week's 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Highlights/Key Facts:

* Wireless connectivity and multimedia functionality such as Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi®, FM and music playback have come to define the smartphone experience, popularizing the advanced handsets among growing segments of the population. However, each of these technologies introduces complexity to the overall phone system and requires additional power, creating challenges for OEMs in delivering handsets that have long battery life and are easy to use.
* Broadcom's InConcert combo chip solutions are designed to significantly reduce the complexity of integrating and using these technologies by offloading processing functions from the host, while also reducing overall system power consumption. With mature, proven implementations of each of these technologies, Broadcom combo chip solutions deliver premium connectivity options that conform to the high performance standards of leading handset makers like Samsung.
o Combo chips have been integrated into leading handsets and other handsets that rely upon advanced wireless connectivity to enable the advanced features consumers have come to expect.
* As one of the top makers of popular smartphones and smart feature phone handsets, Samsung has demonstrated leadership in combining connectivity technologies in unique ways to deliver a range of handsets that appeal to diverse end users. From the Blue Earth phone (which includes a small solar panel to charge the battery) to the customizable Corby Pro phone, Samsung provides users with a range of handsets to choose from.
* The InConcert BCM2075 combo chip solution includes the following:
o The Bluetooth portion of the chip is Bluetooth 3.0 compliant and provides on-chip sub-band codec (SBC) support.
o The FM radio capabilities are among the most advanced in the industry, enabling the enjoyment of live programs as well as integrated MP3 recording to facilitate audio time shifting similar to digital video recorder (DVR) operations.
o The GPS core uses a host-based integration architecture that splits the processing duties between the BCM2075 and the host CPU system to offload the most computationally-intensive GPS activities and provide the lowest power consuming GPS available.
o The technology also allows wireless devices to collaboratively co-exist, providing products enabled with Broadcom wireless connectivity chips the ability to intelligently minimize radio interference issues, synchronizing transmissions to maximize throughput and performance among multiple radio technologies.
* The combo chip solution is now shipping in multiple handset devices from leading manufacturers.
