Nokia stretches lead in UK market

Nokia regains and stretches its lead over Samsung in the UK, as BlackBerry also grows share and leapfrogs LG into fourth.

Nokia has regained its lead in the UK market, and stretched it to around nine percentage points in recent weeks over second-placed Samsung.

Samsung was number one in the UK by market share in the two months before Christmas, topping the sales chart with around 33 per cent during Christmas week.

But Nokia recaptured the lead by early January, and has increased its share by around three per cent in the intervening period with the release of the X3 and X6 handsets in the consumer market and the E72 in the business sector. It now stands at a little over 30 per cent.

Samsung's share has at the same time dropped by 11 percentage points since its Christmas high, with around 21 per cent at the start of March. It has brought new QWERTY and slider Genio variants this year, as well the Google Android-based Galaxy Portal. It has put heavy marketing behind its Omnia II device also.

Weekly sales measures by market researcher GfK show Sony Ericsson's share has dropped by almost three percentage points since the start of the year, although it retains third. Its flagship Aino and Satio, after early software troubles, have led its portfolio. Its new Vivaz launched on O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile last week.

LG has remained broadly steady with between eight and nine per cent of the UK market. LG's first Android handset, the InTouch Max, launched on T-Mobile and Virgin at the start of the year.

But BlackBerry maker Research in Motion has jumped more than four points in the first quarter to around 11 per cent, and into fourth place ahead of LG in UK market share terms. It is pushing into the prepay market, and increasingly into the consumer mass market with the Curve 8520 in particular.

iPad's First-Day Stutters: Problems Charging Over USB and iPhone App Upscaling

The underlying problems, things like the lack of multitasking, expandability, the anemic iBookstore selection--all that stuff has been covered in the initial reviews. It's something else entirely to actually have an Apple iPad in your hands, playing with it--you'll discover quirks that only come from use, and the Internet community has been very vocal about them.

Charging (or Not) Over USB

Consumer Reports reports (ha!) that charging the iPad over USB is, at best, hit-and-miss. Plugging an iPad into a computer's USB port, instead of an AC jack, often results in syncing only, with the battery refusing to charge. Initially it was thought to be some kind of snarky OS problem, since USB ports in Windows and Linux machines seemed to have the lowest success rate in charging, but Apple responded in the negative: it's a simple power issue.

The iPad requires 10W of energy to charge, much more than a typical USB port allows to trickle out. Many modern desktops, including Apple's own iMac, will have a "high power" USB port that can supply that kind of power, though it'll still charge extremely slowly compared to an AC outlet (some have said it's about a third as fast). That means most laptop USB ports won't charge it (one exception is Apple's newest MacBook Pro) and accessories like USB hubs and USB-sporting keyboards are certainly out of the picture. Good thing Apple included that impressive 10- to 12-hour battery life, right?

The Problem With iPhone Apps

Early reviews focused on the new, and by all accounts impressive (yet expensive) iPad apps. Why cover iPhone apps everyone already knows? Most reviews sufficed to mention that iPhone apps do indeed work, either in the "tiny picture in the middle of the screen" mode, and blown up to fit the iPad's bigger screen. But as it turns out, you'll mostly need to opt for those expensive native iPad apps--iPhone apps are usable, but you won't want to use them.

Gizmodo's John Herrman explains exactly why these upscaled iPhone apps are a little bit...yeck. Text is a serious problem, blown up and blocky and pixelated, but that's not even the worst part. The problem, which somehow nobody realized until today, is that iPhone apps simply aren't designed for the bigger screen:

But the most jarring aspect of it all, as shown by the Tweetdeck apps, is that iPhone apps simply aren't designed for the larger screen. They look cartoonish. Text is massive. Buttons take up too much space. In the case of text-based apps, the iPhone-centric design is enough to render them useless. If an app hasn't been designed for the iPad specifically, you probably won't enjoy using it.

The one exception seems to be games, where the comparative dearth of both text and, often, buttons makes them less susceptible to Upscaled Disease. Maybe it's best to think about iPhone apps as a "just in case," rather than the core of the iPad's app catalog.

You Need a Case

This is a hard one to hear. Real gadget geeks hate cases. Modern gadgets, maybe especially those from Jonathan Ives's Apple studio, are designed to be as beautiful as they are functional. Putting gadgets in cases ruins the sleek lines and the careful choice of materials, and replaces them with a crappy $15 sleeve. Live dangerously, we say! The beauty is worth the risk!

But the iPad needs a case. It's too big to be protected by a pocket, and tossing it in a backpack is just too dangerous, really: it's too small to fill out any bag like a laptop does, and considering its most important element is a totally unprotected, 10-inch screen, it's bound to get scratched all to hell.

Even more, the iPad's peculiar design has led many to reason that this thing just needs a case. At 1.5 pounds, it's heavy to hold for long periods of time--many cases, including Apple's own, pack kickstands for superior viewing. And our very own Tyler Gray's adorable son discovered one more problem: the iPad's curved metal backside may be beautiful, but it's extremely unstable. It rotates and slips and slides and all in all makes typing altogether more difficult than it needs to be. So another lesson from today: Even case-haters will buy iPad cases, and given the first day sales, that means a whole lot of cases.

Four New Samsung Bada Phones, Future Plans Leaked

ST PETERSBURG, Russia - During a MobileMonday event, Samsung held a Bada Developer Day, where it showcased its latest software platform, in an attempt to attract potential software developers. In one of its slides, there was a brief mention of four new, cheaper Bada phones to be unveiled in the future.

There is no detailed information on these new smartphones, besides them being cheaper, and two of them having a hardware slide-out QWERTY keyboard. These should be regular variants of the Wave - some thinner, some with less features, and others with keyboards.

Besides explaining the internal workings of the Bada system, the presenters at the event also went over Samsung Mobile's latest user interface, TouchWIZ 3.0, and its integrated Social Hub.

In the near future, Samsung plans to expand its Bada smartphone to 75 countries, 156 operators, and offer more than 6 500 apps to go with it. The manufacturer actually expects to soon overtake Nokia's marketshare, according to the slide below.

A new developer competition was introduced at the event, with a total prize of US$2.7m, with the winning programmer taking home US$300 000. The contest is limited to Russia and ends on the 15th of August.

Nearly Two Million 60 GHz Chipsets in 2015

Two 60 GHz wireless protocols that initially target different applications may someday compete head-to-head, according to a new Research Brief from ABI Research that includes a forecast of nearly two million 60 GHz chipset shipments in 2015.

WirelessHD is a standard currently available in products using the unlicensed 60 GHz frequency band and has forty companies among its promoters and adopters. Its initial use-case is for streaming of HDTV signals within the home.

Twenty-six companies are behind the Wireless Gigabit Alliance and its WiGig standard, which is aimed initially at allowing WLAN devices to communicate at gigabit speeds within a typical room.

WirelessHD Here and Now

According to ABI Research analyst Xavier Ortiz, “The 60 GHz frequency band has interesting properties that offer security and efficiency advantages for short-range networking.” At these frequencies signals are attenuated by atmospheric oxygen, making eavesdropping less likely. Also, the smaller antennas used can achieve more efficient use of the spectrum for point-to-multipoint applications.

WirelessHD is the first of these standards to reach real products, most of which are aimed at the HDTV market. However, says Ortiz, “Two disadvantages inhibit WirelessHD’s adoption and negate its first-to-market advantage. First, the transmitters and receivers are expensive, in the $600-1000 range. They are also power-hungry. Solutions need to be capable of bidirectional transfer with a vast reduction in power consumption.” SiBeam and Georgia Tech are two companies that can do bidirectional data transfer.

But WiGig Promises “Wi-Fi on Steroids”

WiGig products are still on the drawing-board, but the standard aims to be part of the existing Wi-Fi ecosystem through Wi-Fi access points that include WiGig chipsets. Such an arrangement would open up the colossal existing Wi-Fi market to WiGig vendors. “If the Wi-Fi Alliance chooses to join WiGig for a 60 GHz solution,” Ortiz believes, “WiGig will likely be successful.”

Eventually, says Ortiz, WiGig and WirelessHD vendors want to target each others’ initial markets as well.

Application Downloads Pick Up Pace after Smartphone Sales Soar

ABI Research expects 2010 to be a big year for mobile application downloads, with just under 6 billion mobile applications forecast to be downloaded, up from an estimated 2.4 billion in 2009. The rapid adoption of smartphones, registering a sales growth of 20% in 2009, as well as the proliferation of application stores are the major drivers for this expansion. In addition, two new smartphone platforms will make their debut later this year; Samsung’s Bada OS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series. Both platforms, similar to Apple’s, will have proprietary application stores and are racing to populate these stores with winning applications.

“The iPhone will continue to be the leading app platform, with a database of over 125,000 applications offering niche and localized content,” says wireless research associate Bhavya Khanna. “Other platforms are still playing catch-up, with Android being the fastest gainer among them. ABI Research expects that with over 30,000 applications now available, over 800 million Android applications will be downloaded in 2010.”

Revenues from mobile app sales, however, are expected to decline by 2012, as competition has led to downward pressure on application prices; and a greater proportion of “must-have” applications will begin to have free or advertising-supported substitutes. In addition, many handset makers such as Nokia, and Motorola with its Android handsets, have started to bundle applications that allow users to connect to popular social networks, instant messaging, and GPS services.

According to Vice President of Forecasting Jake Saunders, “As competition heats up, app makers are both dropping prices and ‘going free’ to stay on top of the download charts.”

LG Electronics, Certification Experts Team Up for Global Energy Efficiency Testing

Landmark agreement with international certification bodies promotes worldwide testing approach, helps assure compliance.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. -- Underscoring its commitment to energy efficient products, LG Electronics Inc. today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with three of the world's top certification authorities to promote reliable methods for testing the energy efficiency of consumer electronics and home appliance products around the globe.

The three bodies – Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), Intertek and CSA International – will put LG products through rigorous tests to ensure they comply with the highest standards of energy efficiency and applicable government requirements. By voluntarily submitting its products to all three certification organizations, LG intends to further enhance its reputation in the area of energy efficiency.

"By making excellent products whose energy efficiency can be independently verified, LG is at the forefront of international efforts by manufacturers to conserve energy," said LG Electronics Vice Chairman and CEO Yong Nam. "This initiative is another example of LG's proactive approach to responsibly managing energy usage and verifying the reliability of our results while further strengthening LG's position as a leader in consumer electronics and home appliances."

The MOU was signed at LG corporate headquarters in Seoul by top management from each organization: LG CEO Nam; Dr. Woo Paik, LG Electronics President and Chief Technology Officer; Keith E. Williams, Global CEO of UL; Gregg Tiemann, Global CEO of Intertek Commercial & Electrical; Ash Sahi, Global CEO of CSA Group.

By joining hands with three internationally respected certifying bodies, LG aims to promote, in cooperation with other stakeholders and governmental authorities, a trusted uniform testing system that can be used around the globe. This will increase consumer confidence in energy-efficient electronics products and reduce unnecessary regional barriers to world trade.

Under the agreement, UL, Intertek and CSA International will inspect products from LG's factories around the world and conduct tests in nine initial categories including refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and TVs. The number of products will gradually increase to encompass LG's full product portfolio.

The three bodies will evaluate the company's progress in the LG Electronics Energy Assurance Program (LEAP), which will focus on both consistent energy consumption performance and enhancing energy efficiency in the manufacturing process.

UL, Intertek and CSA International conduct energy efficiency tests throughout North America, Europe and Asia and are recognized as world authorities in the field:

* UL Environment is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., a global leader in conformity assessment that has been testing products and writing standards for more than a century. DoCoMo goes gunning for iPhone

NTT DoCoMo Inc. released its Xperia smart phone Thursday, taking direct aim at the Apple iPhone's dominant share of the Japanese market.

Hot item: People line up to buy NTT DoCoMo's just-released Xperia smart phone at a Yodobashi Camera outlet in Tokyo's Akihabara district Thursday. KAZUAKI NAGATA PHOTO

"While we think the iPhone is a really good phone, this can match it," NTT DoCoMo President Ryuji Yamada told reporters after an event at the Yodobashi Camera store in Tokyo's Akihabara district to celebrate the Xperia's debut.

Made by Sony Ericsson, the Xperia has a 4-inch touch screen on which users can handle most tasks by sliding a finger, just like on the iPhone.

It has an 8.1-megapixel built-in camera and is powered by Google Inc.'s Android operating system, which provides synchronized Google services, including Gmail and Calendar.

It also has proprietary features, including Timescape, which can display e-mail, calls and posts on social-networking systems like Facebook in a unified manner.

"I am sure the Xperia will be used by many customers as a new entertainment tool," said Yamada, noting DoCoMo has more than 50,000 preorders.

With DoCoMo strongly promoting the Xperia through TV commercials and special events, some industry observers say the initial reaction will be quite strong.

The Xperia's popularity "will depend on how strongly and articulately DoCoMo will promote the product, but the initial sales will probably be high," said Hiroshi Sakai, chief analyst at SMBC Friend Research Center.

Sakai said that while ordinary users may take some time to get used to the device because it differs from regular mobile phones, the Xperia could reach a wide audience once more people get comfortable with it, as was the case with the iPhone.

The popularity of the iPhone has created momentum for smart phones, which have more computing power than regular phones.

Following Softbank Mobile, which handles the iPhone in Japan, and DoCoMo, KDDI's au announced its first two smart phones Tuesday. They will hit store shelves in June.

"I feel that the era of the smart phone has finally come to Japan. Other carriers will be releasing smart phones as well," said DoCoMo's Yamada.

Meanwhile, the iPhone dominates the smart phone market with some experts estimating that more than 2 million or even 3 million units have been sold since its Japan debut in July 2008. A product is usually considered a big hit if sales exceed 1 million.

Sakai said the spread of Android as an operating system will be key if Japan's smart phone market is to keep growing.

And that appears to be the recent trend, as Softbank announced its first Android smart phone, HTC's Desire, on Sunday, while one of au's smart phones will use the OS as well.

Although DoCoMo released its first Android phone last July, that handset didn't become a big hit, while iPhone users grew by leaps and bounds.

But the hype has been growing for the Xperia, the first new phone provided to DoCoMo by Sony Ericsson since July 2008. Some analysts say the time allowed Sony Ericsson to focus on creating a good product.

Sakai said the industry will be keeping a close eye on how the Xperia sells to get a sense of whether Android-based phones will spread.

Some of the people who came to Akihabara to buy an Xperia expressed interest in smart phones in general and Android specifically.

"I've wanted to buy a smart phone for quite a while," said a 25-year-old man from Ibaraki Prefecture who was lining up for an Xperia.

He said that since he started working for a company this month he will have more financial stability, so he decided to get a smart phone.

He chose the Xperia because he likes programming and Android has more freedom than the iPhone's OS. Applications for the iPhone must be written on an Apple computer.

Sharp Develops 3D Touchscreen LCD—Switchable Between 2D and 3D Modes—with Industry’s Highest Brightness*1

Enables 3D Images Without the Need for Special Glasses.

Sharp Corporation has developed a 3D touchscreen LCD featuring the industry’s highest brightness that can switch between 2D and 3D modes. Users can view 3D images without the need to wear special glasses, making this LCD ideal for mobile devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, and smartphones.

The newly developed 3D LCD uses a parallax barrier system to display 3D images. This parallax barrier, which has a series of vertical slits, is incorporated into an ordinary LCD to control the path of light reaching the right and left eyes, thus creating a sense of depth. However, the conventional 3D LCD with this system had difficulty in displaying high-quality images in 3D mode.

The 3D LCD developed by Sharp at this time significantly improves image quality by achieving both high brightness and low crosstalk*2 thanks to advances in CG-Silicon technology*3 and optimization of the parallax barrier. Advances in CG-Silicon technology have shrunk the wiring width within the LCD panel, allowing more light to pass and doubling the brightness (to 500 cd/m2, the industry’s highest) compared to the conventional model*4. In addition, optimizing the parallax barrier design has increased the efficiency of light, thereby dramatically reducing crosstalk. Also, the thickness of the LCD module is about the same as conventional 2D displays even though it is a touchscreen display. As 3D images can be displayed in both portrait and landscape screen orientations, it is ideal for sophisticated mobile devices such as smartphones.

Sharp has also developed a non-touchscreen 3D LCD and will start its mass production in the first half of fiscal 2010.
Conventional 3D LCD Newly developed 3D LCD Difference from conventional 3D LCD
Screen size 2.4 inches 3.4 inches —

LG COACHES COOK-OFF DURING FINAL FOUR WEEKEND BENEFITS COACHES VS. CANCER

Competition Judged by Celebrity Chef Tim Love in LG Kitchen at NCAA® Final Four®

INDIANAPOLIS — John Calipari, head coach of the University of Kentucky’s men’s basketball team, and Mike Brey, head coach of the University of Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team, traded their playbooks for aprons here today at the LG Coaches Cook-off during NCAA® Final Four® weekend. Both coaches are appearing on behalf of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer — and showing how LG premium kitchen appliances help make both you and your kitchen stand out — the coaches brought their competitive spirit to the contest at Bracket Town™, the NCAA Final Four ultimate fan fest.

After much chopping, seasoning and sautéing, Chef Tim Love, who judged the two coaches’ dishes, named Coach Brey the winner. LG Electronics, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, hosted the cooking competition and is making a $10,000 donation in both participating coaches’ names to Coaches vs. Cancer, a program that unites the American Cancer Society and the NABC in the fight against cancer.

"Coach Calapari got out of the gate fast, but with hard work and a great coach, I knew we'd come back strong,” said Brey. “I'm very proud to be the winner of today's LG Coaches Cook-off and to take home a powerful donation to a great charity."

The action took place in the LG Kitchen in NCAA Bracket Town Refreshed by Coca-Cola™ at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Each coach was given 45 minutes to prepare grilled lamb chops with a red wine syrup. Both coaches were supported by a student sous chef from The Chef’s Academy in Indianapolis, as they competed side-by-side in a kitchen fully equipped with four-door French Door Refrigerators, induction cooktops, double wall ovens and microwaves from LG. The coaches were judged on their creativity, presentation, and the flavor of their dish.

"My goal was to leave with all ten fingers and have fun,” said Calipari. “I did both and everyone wins with LG's generous donation to Coaches vs. Cancer. Congrats to Coach Brey."

Celebrity Chef Love, owner of the Lonesome Dove and the Love Shack in Texas, perhaps best known for his appearances on the CBS Early Show and Food Network’s Iron Chef, praised each of the coaches for their good humor during the competition: “Even though both coaches seem more comfortable courtside with their teams, they were great sports in the kitchen. It was a fun competition for all involved and benefited a great charity.”

In addition to the LG Coaches Cook-off, attendees at Bracket Town will be treated to a number of activities, including a “Clean Sweep” obstacle course featuring LG’s latest vacuum and laundry products and an EA Gaming tournament on INFINIA LED HDTV screens. As the Official 3-D Sponsor of the Final Four, LG also will be showing the first game of the Final Four in 3-D, providing Bracket Town fans with “something better” for their Final Four viewing experience.

“LG is thrilled to give attendees the ultimate fan experience in Bracket Town, from the 3-D game broadcast to our mobile phone NCAA experience to the snacks coming out of the LG kitchen,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “The LG Coaches Cook-off is an opportunity for LG to give back through Coaches vs. Cancer and to provide basketball fans with a chance to see the personalities of their favorite coaches when they’re not competing on the court.”
