Nokia N8 launching tomorrow?

UPDATE: It could be the Nokia N8 folks! We’ve just confirmed that the countdown is indeed for a separate event from the Carpe Diem app. We’ll be bringing you coverage of it as it happens so be sure to check in at 9am tomorrow.

The Nokia N8 flagship Symbian 3 phone is hotly tipped to launch this month, but it could arrive as soon as tomorrow. How do we know? Nokia’s running a mysterious countdown page right now, and it ends in under 24 hours’ time.

Head on over to http://events.nokia.com/everyoneconnect and you’ll see a countdown timer under the banner “Everyone connect”, that ends at 9am tomorrow, UK time. We’ve also received an invite to the online event from Nokia, which packs a mysterious speech bubble, suggesting some form of messaging news. Could this be a Nokia N8 with newly integrated instant messaging and social networking?

Needless to say, we’ve had a rummage around the source code on the Nokia countdown page, but there’s no reference to a Nokia N8. But we’ve got our fingers crossed, since it’s been nearly a year and a half since Nokia outed its last flagship Symbian phone, the N97. The Nokia N8 has to happen soon, or MeeGo will arrive and blow Symbian 3 out of the water before it can even get underway.

Nokia N8 12MP cameraphone spied
We’ve got our fingers crossed it’s a Nokia N8 announcement, but it could be one other thing: the launch of a “Carpe Diem Daily” app, which Nokia is hosting with The School Of Life from 8.30am in London tomorrow also. It’s supposedly a “life-enriching” new mobile phone app, but we’ve also received a separate invite for this, and it seems strange that one would spill the beans on what to expect, while the other ramps up the hype with secrecy.

We’ve asked Nokia for clarification and will update when we hear back.

Apple's iPhone 4.0 beta includes linked contacts, iChat sounds

A couple of new discoveries were made this past weekend by developers familiarizing themselves with the first external beta of Apple's iPhone 4.0 operating system, namely the addition of a linked contacts feature and the presence of iChat sounds in the resource files.

Linked Contacts

As can be seen below, a new version of the Contacts app due to ship with this summer's release will let users link multiple contacts together to form unified contact lists. The option "Link New Contacts…" appears at the base of each contact info pane.

Once a linked contact has been added to a primary contact, the info pane for the primary contact merges that contact information for both contacts into a single pane relabeled as "Unified Info." An option at the base of the unified pane lists the number of linked contacts and directs users to a "Linked Contacts" pane to merge even more contacts into the unified list.

Linked Contacts

iChat Sounds

And as if there weren't enough evidence mounting to suggest Apple is preparing to release a mobile version of its iChat video conference software for its iPhone OS devices, the folks over at iphonehacks.it have tacked on a bit more.

Specifically, they found inside the iPhone 4.0 resources a folder containing reproductions of iChat's sounds that are heard when sending an audio/video chat invitation and accepting an audio/video chat invitation.

Recent rumors have suggested that Apple's forth-generation iPhone, due for release this summer alongside iPhone Software 4.0, could include a forward-facing video camera in addition to the standard camera located on the rear of the handset.

Linked Contacts

Last week, AppleInsider also discovered the presence of iChatAgent running in the background of iPhone's updated with iPhone Software 4.0 beta.

Industry Leaders Announce Initiative to Accelerate Interoperable WiMAX 2 Solutions built upon IEEE 802.16m

Building upon the success of WiMAX Release 1, industry leaders announce the creation of the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative (WCI) to accelerate the WiMAX 2 ecosystem.

TAIPEI, Taiwan--Leading WiMAX silicon suppliers, equipment makers and research organizations have announced a new initiative to accelerate interoperability of the next release of WiMAX technology, WiMAX 2, based upon the IEEE 802.16m standard. 802.16m builds upon 802.16e by adding new capabilities while maintaining backward compatibility. It meets the International Telecommunications Union requirements for 4G or “IMT-Advanced,” delivering higher system capacity – peak rates of more than 300 Mbps – lower latency and increased VoIP capacity. The performance gains will enable WiMAX operators to keep up with the explosion in demand for rich, multimedia mobile applications and devices which increasingly require high speed, on-the-go connectivity.

“Alvarion has been a strong advocate of open standards and interoperable solutions that help foster a complete ecosystem”

The 802.16m air interface standard definition began in 2006 in the IEEE as a follow-on to 802.16e, and is expected to be completed in the 2nd half of 2010.

As the 4G wireless broadband industry begins to take shape, it is imperative to evolve the industry model to create a better value chain for service providers. With this goal in mind, leading WiMAX vendors Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Sequans, XRONet and ZTE as well as the Taiwanese research organization, ITRI, have launched the WiMAX 2 Collaboration Initiative (WCI). The group will work closely with the WiMAX Forum to accelerate the implementation of interoperable system profiles for WiMAX 2 equipment and devices with the goal of improving the economics of mobile broadband. The objectives of the group include:

* Technology collaboration and joint performance benchmarking;
* Joint testing of 4G applications over WiMAX 2 solutions;
* Early network level interoperability testing;
* Plugfests to prepare for WiMAX Forum certification.

“The Taiwanese device manufacturing ecosystem is already providing all manner of clients today – standalone modems, USB dongles, embedded modules for PCs, mobile Internet devices, handsets and CE devices - for Release 1 of WiMAX,” said Dr. Cheng-Wen Wu, General Director of Information & Communications Research Laboratories and VP of ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute). “ITRI has demonstrated great dedication to developing WiMAX technology and will strongly support early commercialization of 802.16m.”

"UQ is very pleased with the creation of the 802.16m Collaboration Group. UQ believes WCI will contribute to accelerate build up of the 802.16m ecosystem. UQ has a strong intention to upgrade its network to 802.16m to provide an even higher level of mobile broadband services to our customers," said Dr. Fumio Watanabe, CTO of UQ Communications, Inc.”

The WiMAX industry is seeing a non-linear shift in mobile broadband usage models – similar in magnitude to that experienced when people went from dial-up to broadband. Consumers on some WiMAX networks are consuming 7-10 GB of data per month. WiMAX 1 ushered in a new, open model for high speed, wireless Internet and WiMAX 2 will keep pushing the envelope to help operators keep up with insatiable demand.

“The wireless industry is convinced that the growing volume of data consumers are eating up is a bad thing,” said Mike Sievert, Chief Commercial Officer, Clearwire. “But for us, our spectrum position gives us tremendous capacity and the ability to meet the explosive demand for mobile broadband. Today our CLEAR mobile customers are using an average of more than 7GB of data per month on our network. And while other companies are considering how to curtail usage, we simply say to our customers, here’s the Internet: the world in the palm of your hand – enjoy it.”

“These improvements are a great forward step for the WiMAX community in meeting the capacity demands of 4G customers all over the world,” said Iyad Tarazi, Vice President of Network Development at Sprint.

The group will issue detailed milestones and delivery schedules within the next 3-6 months with the goal to support the WiMAX Forum’s readiness to certify commercial products by late 2011. The group includes the top suppliers of WiMAX silicon and equipment, providing solutions to more than one hundred Mobile WiMAX operators worldwide.

Supporting quotes from all group members (in alphabetical order).

“Alvarion has been a strong advocate of open standards and interoperable solutions that help foster a complete ecosystem,” said Mohammad Shakouri, Corporate Vice President of Innovation and Marketing for Alvarion. “We believe WiMAX 2 is a natural evolution of the technology that will allow the operators to strive to seamlessly enhance the performance of their current networks. We look forward to working with the industry leaders to bring the technology early to the market.”

“Beceem has already announced that its next generation chip will support all 4G standards and networks, and we are excited to be part of the strong ecosystem that is embracing WiMAX 2,” said Lars Johnsson, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Beceem Communications. “Many WiMAX service providers rely on devices that are based on our 4G chips, and they are looking forward to adopting next generation devices that will allow them to migrate their networks to WiMAX 2, which will in turn allow them to provide higher connection speeds, and to do so at further increased network efficiency.”

“As the industry leading supplier of WiMAX single-chip solutions with the largest worldwide deployment and over two million single-chips shipped to major operators worldwide, GCT is looking forward to playing a key role in this new initiative to accelerate WiMAX Release 2 solutions based upon the 802.16m standard,” commented Dr. KH Lee, President and CEO of GCT Semiconductor. “We will work closely with members of this initiative to quickly bring WiMAX 2 to market and to enable new devices that require higher capacity by fully leveraging GCT’s extensive experience to build up a mature WiMAX ecosystem worldwide.”

“Intel is pleased to see strong ecosystem support emerging to accelerate WiMAX 2 capabilities,” said Pouya Taaghol, CTO of Intel’s Mobile Wireless Group. “Intel has been a leader in driving the IEEE 802.16m standard and will work closely with this group and the WiMAX Forum to ensure WiMAX 2 meets the needs of operators facing explosive demand for mobile data and services.”

"Motorola’s WiMAX leadership is driven by our commitment to WiMAX, proven by our extensive portfolio of access points and customer premises equipment,” said Bruce Brda, Senior Vice President And General Manager, Motorola Networks business. “Motorola Networks will continue to provide technology choice to operators by advancing to 802.16m while assuring investment protection, unprecedented 4G performance enhancements and a robust ecosystem."

Woonsub Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of the Telecommunication Systems Business, Samsung Electronics, said, “We’re strongly committed to accelerating the development and commercialization of WiMAX 2 solutions based on the 802.16m standard as Samsung was the first in the world to commercialize WiMAX 1 solutions. We are confident that the WCI will rapidly expand the Mobile WiMAX market to provide mobile Internet to people in all corners of the globe,” he added.

“As a leader in 4G chip technology, Sequans is committed to the continued advancement of WiMAX and to the support of this important industry effort that will benefit the entire ecosystem,” said Georges Karam, CEO, Sequans.

“XRONet is focused on providing the best WiMAX chipsets optimized for mobile devices. XRONet is committed to developing next generation WiMAX chipsets for 802.16m providing better performance and higher capacity than current 802.16e solutions,” said Will (Hyungwon) Kim, CEO, XRONet. With its broad range of devices & equipment in service for years, WiMAX is a mature technology and is the fastest ramping 4G technology in the world. As leading companies start providing 802.16m products over the next two years, WiMAX will be in an even stronger position to deliver the most advanced 4G solutions.”

"ZTE is a leading supplier of 4G end-to-end solutions. For the past few years, ZTE has played an important role in promoting the WiMAX ecosystem," said Sean Cai, Deputy General Manager of ZTE WiMAX Product Line, ZTE USA. "We are committed to future WiMAX evolution, and continue to invest in the 802.16m standard and technology development."

After iPad, Rivals Offer Variations on a Theme

Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in “stealth mode” with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

H.P. is also working on a slate that would run the Android system; this has been nicknamed “the half-pint,” because it measures about six inches diagonally, smaller than the iPad.

Microsoft has generated some Apple-esque buzz on blogs as well as through leaked videos of the prototype of its slate, the Courier. According to a Microsoft employee who has seen the device, the Courier is about as big as an ordinary paperback and folds out to reveal two screens. Users would be able to take notes on the device with a pen, and easily drag and share content between the screens.

But Microsoft engineers have concerns about the battery power needed to keep the two screens going, these people said. And internally the company is struggling to identify the right market. At first the idea was to market the Courier for designers and architects, but lately the company is thinking of a broader market of consumers and so would include e-books, magazines and other media content on the device.

Microsoft engineers have talked about getting the Courier out by early 2011, though no firm decision has been made to sell the product.

At Nokia, meanwhile, a team of engineers, designers and publishers are working on designing an e-reader, with the hope of making the company dominant in the digital books and apps marketplace.

Mr. Kallasvuo of Nokia declined to comment specifically on an e-reader but said that a small laptop released last year by Nokia had been well received, and that the company continued to explore new types of “converged” devices.

“The consumer will obviously have much more choice when it comes to where or what I want to connect to,” Mr. Kallasvuo said.

He argued that Nokia had more reach through its broad international sales channels to distribute content and more experience dealing with local content in countries like India and China than, say, Apple or Google.

Apple iPad, Google Android to Grab 75% of Tablet Market in 2010

Apple's iPad will nab 51 percent of the tablet market, with 24 percent of such machines based on Google Android for a total of 75 percent of the market through 2010. The tablet market could be worth $3.6 billion through 2010, which leaves plenty of opportunity for others, according to IMS Research. Windows 7 will garner 10 percent market, with the remaining 15 percent going to some proprietary and Linux-based platforms for the home. Sagem in France, T-Mobile in the U.K. and Verizon Wireless and AT&T in the U.S. are among those offering home-based tablets as "control palettes" for users' computing, VOD, VOIP and IPTV needs.

Apple and Google Android will grab 75 percent of the tablet market through 2010, as the iPad's immediate success has proven the consumer market is hungry for tablet computers, according to IMS Research.

IMS projects Apple will capture 51 percent of a tablet market that could be worth $3.6 billion through 2010, which leaves plenty of opportunity for others.

IMS analyst Anna Hunt said she expects Android to follow Apple with 24 percent of the market, with 10 percent going to Windows 7 and the remaining 15 percent going to some proprietary and Linux-based platforms for the home.
Resource Library:

HP's Slate, for example, will run Windows Home 7 Premium Edition. Nokia is reportedly building a Windows 7-based device.

For developers who want more choice and flexibility, Android stands to be the perfect alternative to iPad and Windows 7, with a handful of Android machines coming to the fore, some of which are already out and well known. The Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet is a strong seller in Europe.

Dell's Android 2.0-based Mini 5 tablet is expected in the U.S. this year, while several Android models will feature Nvidia's delayed Tegra chipset, including the Adam from Notion Ink. ViewSonic offers the VTablet 101.

Currently, iPad is king. The iPad went on sale April 3 and by April 8 Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company had sold more than 450,000 units.

While Android is expected to only command half the tablet market iPad will in 2010, Android tablet sales will be buoyed by a strong developer ecosystem and competitively priced content and services.

Hunt noted that many of the applications designed for the iPad platform are actually more expensive than apps for Apple's iPhone OS platform. This presents an opportunity for suppliers that can offer a tablet that is more price competitive for the hardware and the content.

Google’s AdMob Deal Bolstered by Apple’s Move, Schmidt Says

Apple Inc.’s move into mobile advertising shows the market is competitive and U.S. regulators should permit Google Inc. to buy AdMob Inc., Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said April 8 that the Cupertino, California-based company will offer iAd, an advertising platform that would compete with AdMob, on a new operating system for its iPhone. The announcement escalated Apple’s rivalry with Google for customers and application developers as demand for smartphones climbs. “It’s evidence of a highly competitive market,” Schmidt told reporters after a speech yesterday to the annual convention of the American Society of News Editors in Washington. He said the $750 million AdMob purchase, proposed in November, “should go through.” U.S. regulators vetting the deal have sought sworn declarations from Google competitors and advertisers, indicating the government may challenge the deal, people with direct knowledge of the matter said last month. The purchase needs approval from the Federal Trade Commission. AdMob sells ads that appear on Web pages and applications on mobile phones. The Federal Trade Commission is assessing whether the purchase would let Mountain View, California-based Google parlay its dominance in Internet searches on computers to phones.

In remarks to the organization led by newspaper editors, Schmidt said mobile devices such as Apple’s iPad and his company’s Android phone will help newspapers better connect with readers.

Responding to Murdoch

“This is the future,” Schmidt said as he held up an iPad, a Kindle from Amazon.com Inc. and an Android phone. “Technology allows you all to talk directly to your users.” News Corp. Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch said on April 7 that newspaper publishers should prevent Internet search engines, such as Google’s and Microsoft Corp.’s Bing, from linking to full news articles for free. “It’s best to look at Rupert’s comments as in the context of a business negotiation, because he’s a very good businessman,” Schmidt said in response to a question from the audience after his speech to the editors. Even newspaper companies that demand payment for viewing their content online cooperate with Google “because we send a lot of traffic to their sites,” Schmidt said. “We want you to have tools and technologies which will allow you to make a lot of money from those users,” Schmidt said “Because ultimately we need more money going into the system.”

Option of Subscribing

News aggregators should be limited to displaying the headline and a couple of sentences of a news story, and give the user the option of subscribing to the originating publication, according to Murdoch, whose New York-based company publishes the Wall Street Journal among newspapers in the U.S., U.K. and Australia.

News Corp.’s international unit said March 26 it will charge for online access to The Times of London and The Sunday Times newspapers starting in June.

News aggregators are led by Google, the most popular Internet search engine, and Yahoo! Inc.

* Verizon has teamed up with Motorola to trial eco-friendly set-top boxes for FiOS TV customers in select markets. The new QIP models use significantly less energy than existing models. A DVR model will boast increased digital video-recording storage capacity. Packaging for both models will be 100 percent recyclable and made from 75 percent recycled cardboard.
* Kicked off a long-term awareness campaign to educate, encourage and make it easy for Verizon's 220,000 employees to cut energy use, recycle and reuse at work and home. Recent examples include free electronic recycling days, open to the public, at various company locations including the company's Operations Center in Basking Ridge, N.J., (April 21) and its facility in Ashburn, Va. (April 21). All materials collected during the campaign will be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
* Verizon's IT, security, communications and network expertise are helping the utility sector ramp up smart grid deployment. The company's intelligent IP and wireless networks provide an ideal foundation for the smart grid's control and metering functions.

In 2009, Verizon's aggressive energy reduction and recycling measures reduced the company's CO2 emissions by more than 793 million pounds, approximately the amount of CO2 emitted by 46,700 homes in a year. The company also improved its rate of emissions per million dollars in revenue to 60.2 metric tons of CO2 in 2009, from 64.4 metric tons in 2008.

In 2009 Verizon took several steps toward increasing the sustainability of the company. Examples include:

* A new lab in Columbia, Md., for federal customers interested in Optical LAN services and technology. Passive optical network technology can reduce power consumption by up to 75 percent because it requires no additional regeneration of power for up to 12 miles from a campus data center.
* Setting energy efficiency standards for the company's suppliers of network equipment, resulting in saving 91 million kilowatt hours and more than 114 million pounds of CO2 avoidance. In 2008, Verizon led the industry by being the first company to establish energy efficiency standards.
* Handling millions of virtual meetings each month for customers, and conducting virtual meetings between Verizon employees, customers, partners and suppliers. The meetings include high-definition video conferencing and immersive video, which makes participants feel as though they are in the same room. By skipping the trip and meeting virtually, Verizon employees avoided the equivalent of 8 million pounds of CO2, which is like taking nearly 700 passenger cars off the road for a year.
* Monitoring building temperatures and installing energy-efficient lighting, which reduced energy consumption by 84 million kilowatt hours, enough energy to power 7,800 homes for a year. The company's operations center in Basking Ridge, N.J., and two Verizon Wireless stores earned the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED silver and gold certifications, respectively.
* Drivers of Verizon vehicles conserved 1.7 million gallons of fuel in 2009 as part of the company's continuing efforts to reduce engine idling, the equivalent of taking 2,800 cars off the road for a year.
* Encouraging business customers to opt for paperless billing from Verizon. Each time a customer does so, Verizon donates money to the American Forests' Global ReLeaf program, which replenishes trees in the U.S. American Forests planted more than 70,000 trees in 2009, through its partnership with Verizon.

Harris Corporation and LG Electronics Demonstrate Scalable Full-Channel Mobile DTV Technology

Flexible Spectrum Option Delivers Even More Over-the-Air Mobile TV Programs Than Possible with Traditional Mobile DTV Broadcasting.

LAS VEGAS -- With an eye on the future for spectrum owners interested in reaching millions of mobile TV viewers, Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) today took the wraps off its latest technological innovation developed with LG Electronics — mobile digital television delivered in "Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode." The demonstration features functioning hardware for both transmission and reception of mobile DTV signals using enhanced technology.

The new system enables as many as 16 different video programs to be sent in the same 6 MHz bandwidth utilized by a TV broadcaster. It has been proposed for standardization to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and is being unveiled this week at the 2010 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention.

Current TV broadcasters are required by the Federal Communications Commission to offer at least one standard-definition digital TV program in their 19.4 Mbps broadcast bitstream. Owners of other 700 MHz spectrum, however, have more flexibility. The Harris/LG demonstration will show spectrum owners and all terrestrial broadcasters how to maximize spectrum use with a greater variety of TV programs to reach mobile viewers "on the go" as viewing habits change.

This demonstration can be seen in the ATSC-OMVC Mobile Digital TV Pavilion (Booth SU5217A, South Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center) during the entire 2010 NAB Show.

Multiple Mobile Programs on One Channel

To achieve its robust approach to Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode, LG and Harris engineers have trimmed the main digital program to enable a mere trickle of data — enough to advertise available mobile programs on the service to in-home viewers. Most of the 19.4 Mbps bitstream in the 6 MHz TV channel is then cleared for transmission of various mobile programs, which can all be beamed from the same broadcast infrastructure.

"We realize there are applications for digital broadcasting that go far beyond the services transmitted by TV stations," said Dr. Jong Kim, president of LG Electronics' U.S. R&D lab. "Companies that own 700 MHz spectrum are beginning to ask how they might put the power of ATSC mobile digital broadcasting to use, and we're responding by creating a new method of utilizing digital transmission to transmit even more programs. With our Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode system, we can offer multiple programs for mobile devices and a 'barker program' that can be seen by in-home viewers."

The LG-Harris Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode is designed to be compatible with the ATSC A/153 Mobile DTV Standard adopted by the ATSC last October. It will offer non-traditional broadcasters an effective way to reach millions of mobile, portable and handheld devices.

"LG is committed to providing reception chips to equip receiving devices for Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode within four months of standard adoption," Dr. Kim said. "Co-developed by LG, Zenith and Harris, this technology shows how Mobile DTV can be applied to help non-traditional broadcasters reach the viewing public. We're using commercially available Harris transmission equipment and LG Mobile Digital TV receivers — such as portable TVs, netbook computers and prototype mobile phones — to show how spectrum owners might offer multiple programs of diversified content."

Significant Progress Toward Commercialization

While the demonstration is a prototype, "the finished product will require nothing more than a software upgrade" for Harris Mobile DTV equipment owners, according to Jay Adrick, vice president of broadcast technology for Harris Corporation.

"We're already working with a customer, and there are others operating in the 700 MHz spectrum who plan to launch mobile services that are compatible with the ATSC transmission system," Adrick said. "We believe that Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode transmission will come to market rather quickly, once it is standardized. These are changing times for broadcasters, and they need every tool that they can get to be competitive and to move toward the types of services that people want in the future."

"This is an extension of the ATSC A/153 Mobile DTV standard, so there's a lot of commonality with what broadcasters are already planning to do," Adrick added. "To achieve the Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode, there are, however, some significant changes in coding rate and in the block formats that are used to generate the various segments of the mobile signal."

The technology developed by Harris, LG and Zenith is a leading contender in the ATSC Scalable Full-Channel Mobile Mode standardization process. An ATSC "Candidate Standard" could be adopted in the next several months.
