Taiwan takes a giant leap towards LTE

Monday, April 12, 2010

Nokia Siemens Networks and Chunghwa Telecom collaborate on a live FDD-LTE trial in Taiwan.

In a move to advance the development of new generation mobile broadband, Nokia Siemens Networks and Chunghwa Telecom are conducting a live FDD-LTE trial in Taiwan. For the trial, Nokia Siemens Networks is providing commercial platforms for FDD-LTE, enabling Chunghwa Telecom to evaluate this technology as a natural evolution path for WCDMA.

Nokia Siemens Networks will provide all necessary LTE equipment including core network and base stations, based on commercial platforms, and will also provide related technical support. The trial will showcase Nokia Siemens Networks technology that supports Chunghwa Telecom as it develops the Taiwanese mobile broadband market to enable a new generation of mobile user experiences.

FDD-LTE is the variant of LTE that provides a logical path for GSM, WCDMA and CDMA operators taking the next step in mobile communications evolution. It is relevant for operators who have access to the frequency division duplexing (FDD) spectrum used for these technologies.

“We are committed to offering the latest technology to our customers in Taiwan,” said Dr. Tu Yuan-Kuang, president, Telecommunication Laboratories, Chunghwa Telecom. “In this trial, CHT-TL will test LTE functionalities and evaluate the performance. Also, we will provide interworking testing with Taiwanese companies to develop terminals and foster our international competitiveness in a new arena. Nokia Siemens Networks is our existing WCDMA supplier and has pioneered advanced technologies. We expect it to bring advanced LTE technology to this trial and work with us to build a concrete foundation for CHT and the Taiwanese telecom industry for the next generation of mobile broadband communications.”

“We have a 3G leadership position in Taiwan that gives us a competitive edge in providing only the best for our customers,” said Mike Wang, general manager, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, Nokia Siemens Networks. “This trial will contribute to developing the local ecosystem in Taiwan, allowing Chunghwa Telecom to introduce LTE services at a quicker pace.”

Nokia Siemens Networks has been at the forefront of LTE evolution, actively participating in tests and trials for both FDD- and TD-LTE technologies. The company is well ahead of its peers in the early commercialization of both technologies, having recently made the world’s first calls on LTE commercial base stations using fully compliant LTE Release 8 standard software.
