PTC targets Android, others after Apple cleans up App Store

Earlier this year, Apple made several changes to the App Store to address complaints that apps with nothing other than a prurient purpose had infiltrated the App Store. Part of the problem was that kids could still access screenshots for "racy" apps. Apple also began removing a number of these apps after it received complaints from the Parents Television Council. Though the group thinks Apple has some room for improvement, it will be focusing its future efforts on other platforms that are growing in popularity, such as Android, which currently lack Parental Controls.

Parents Television Council is notorious for complaining to the FCC about the sexual or violent nature of TV shows, griping about foul-mouthed YouTube comments, and campaigning against kids being able to buy M-rated video games. The group targeted the App Store earlier this year because Apple's devices—particularly the iPod touch—are so popular with kids and teens. The watchdog group had concerns that some apps could be accessible to children, that App Store pages had Web links that led to yet more objectionable content, and that in the case where Parental Controls were activated, kids could still browse and preview these apps.

Apple ultimately responded by cleaning out a number of these contentious apps and started blocking screenshots in iTunes in addition to the blocks already present in the on-device App Store app. "Whenever we receive customer complaints about objectionable content we review them," Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller told Ars at the time. "If we find these apps contain inappropriate material we remove them and request the developer make any necessary changes in order to be distributed by Apple."

PTC applauded Apple's actions. "Apple has taken a positive first step towards eliminating kids' access to sexually explicit and pornographic content on its product lineup and we applaud the company’s efforts," the group's president, Tim Winter, said in a statement.

PTC does think there's more that Apple could do. In particular, the group is concerned that there is no filtering options for Mobile Safari as there are for desktop browsers. This is even more important on a mobile device, PTC's national grassroots director Gavin McKiernan told Ars, because parents can't sit with the child and monitor their browsing as they could on a desktop PC.

"We're not up in arms against Apple, though," McKiernan said. "We think there's room for improvement, but we are definitely pleased with their response to our complaints."

PTC also thinks other mobile platforms need to take similar measures.

Steve Jobs recently dinged the Android platform as being a "porn phone" during Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 unveiling, partly by virtue of its ability to run any app from any source. "You know, there's a porn store on Android and it has nothing but porn apps," Jobs told journalists during a Q&A session. "You can download them; your kids can download them."

PTC agrees with Jobs that this is a problem, as no other smartphone platform offers a system like Parental Controls. "We plan to draw attention to other platforms, such as Android, or Verizon's Vcast service, that aren't really doing anything," McKiernan told Ars." We definitely want to see progress from some of the other handheld devices."

Despite PTC's singular "think of the children" focus, the group insists it isn't interested in wholesale censorship, as some of its previous campaigns might lead one to believe. "Our goal is on limiting children's access to objectionable content" and ensuring parents have the ability to limit this access when deemed necessary, McKiernan told Ars. "We take no stance on the ability of adults to access legal images, movies, or whatever the case may be."

Free Android phones coming to Adobe employees

This will come as little surprise to anyone who followed technology news this week, but let there be no doubt about the preferred smartphone platform at Adobe: it isn't the iPhone.

Adobe hasn't decided on which Android phone--such as HTC's Incredible--to give employees, but wants to encourage Android use internally.

Adobe confirmed Thursday that it plans to demonstrate a version of Flash for Google's Android software in May at the Google I/O conference, in responding to Apple CEO Steve Jobs' criticism of Flash in an open letter. And the company wants to make sure its employees use those phones: it's preparing to give away Android phones running Flash to employees, according to three sources familiar with the plan.

It's not clear which phone employees will receive (various HTC phones and the Nexus One were mentioned) and it will not be a mandatory shift. But in the time-honored technology industry practice of "dog-fooding" one's own products, Adobe and Google want to encourage Adobe employees to spend as much time using Android and the Flash Player 10.1 as possible.

Google gives away Android phones like they are party favors: it's planning to give every Google I/O attendee either a Motorola Droid or Nexus One, and it gave away Nexus Ones to an audience of CIOs earlier this month at an event for Google Apps.

It's also not clear if this will be a perk just for developers or for the entire company: Adobe had about 8,600 employees worldwide at the end of last November. The company did not respond to a request for comment about its plans.

Correction: This post incorrectly stated that Google plans to give I/O attendees their choice of a Motorola Droid or Nexus One; Google is making that decision based on the attendees' location.

Screenshots and Photos of the Encipher Tablet

Earlier this week, I announced here on this blog that a Nigerian technology company, Encipher Limited is set to unveil the prototype of their Andriod powered tablet this weekend.

Today, the unveiling commenced as the photos of the Encipher tablet went live on Facebook. The Andriod-powered tablet doesn’t look anything like the iPad as some may have anticipated. It looks more like the highly anticipated Google tablet.

I’ve posted some of the pictures below.

Interestingly, the specs of the final product was also announced. Here they are:

Storage

In terms of storage, the Encipher tablet is similar to the iPad which starts at 16GB. However, the iPad also has 32GB and 64GB storage space options. Would there be an Encipher tablet with 64GB storage capacity? We don’t know yet.

Although the Encipher tablet has 16GB storage, there is the option of 5GB online storage. Encipher believes that customers would yearn more for online storage to be able to move around rather than local storage, in the case of theft.
Size

The iPad is 9.7″, while the Encipher tablet has a smaller screen (7″) but is still perfect for viewing pictures and videos. According to Saheed Adepoju, Co-founder and Innovation Manager of Encipher, “the new tablet beats Amazon’s Kindle as it has other purposes rather than a standard ebook reader”.

He further stated that [Encipher] does not “intend to combat with Google…but hopes to “sell [Encipher's] cloud computing services via the device”, such as Hosted Exchange, Cloud storage, Cloud Backup, Hosted desktops, Hosted VoIp, etc. The Encipher tablet when officially released will include Google maps, Ebook reader, Fb app and standard android apps, amongst others.

“The nature of the Encipher tablet unveiling will be in the form of a video demo-ing the features of the prototype and discussion of the various final specs”, he stated in a message to Encipher fans on Facebook.

Encipher is a growing technology consultancy with bases in the UK and Nigeria and with expertise in ensuring that products and services are always available on the “cloud”, regardless of platform or device.

Verizon Droid Incredible shipping date pushed back to May 14th

It looks like those who hesitated with a Droid Incredible purchase are going to have to wait just a little longer than originally expected at this point. I just checked the Verizon website and it is showing a new shipping date of May 14th. Of course, due to the initial success that we have heard about on the launch day, this is not all that surprising, especially considering the shipping date was extended to May 4th within hours of the phone going on sale. Bottom line, if you order a Droid Incredible online from Verizon you are going to have to wait until May 14th for delivery.

Motorola hints at owning mobile OS, acquires Azingo

Motorola’s Co-Chief Executive Officer Greg Brown recently told Bloomberg that his company was ready to make acquisitions to return to growth and it looks like we might have spotted their first deal.

According to a LinkedIn profile, it appears Motorola has acquired mobile platform company Azingo. The little known company (I’ve never heard of them) makes their own operating system called Azingo Mobile 2.0 which is based on the Linux platform. Azingo Mobile 2.0 already includes a comprehensive application suite including a Webkit-based browser, web runtime, Flash runtime, and full developer tools.

Motorola’s other Co-CEO Sanjay Jha recently hinted at the possibility of Motorola owning their own operating system in their Q1 2010 earnings call.

“I’ve always felt that owning your OS is important, provided you have an ecosystem, you have all the services and you have an ability and the scale to execute on keeping that OS at the leading edge. HP Expected to Pursue Tablets with Palm WebOS, sans Microsoft

Hewlett-Packard, following its acquisition of Palm, is expected to use WebOS to gain new leverage in the tablet market, even though it would leave HP without the investment and marketing backing of longtime partner Microsoft.

Palm's WebOS mobile platform was said to be a list-topping asset, when the smartphone maker went shopping for a purchaser. And indeed, following the April 28 announcement that HP will acquire Palm for $1.2 billion, analysts are agreeing that WebOS was a major factor in the decision, particularly as it could potentially help HP compete more effectively in the growing tablet market.

Additionally, while a tablet running WebOS would diversify HP's mobile offerings and arouse new interest, it could potentially strain the PC leader's longtime relationship with Microsoft—with which it has previously developed tablet PCs.

"We believe at the end of the day this deal is about Palm's WebOS operating system. While there are only about 2,000 applications supporting WebOS, it is considered to be an easy platform for developers to create new applications," several IDC analysts wrote in an April 28 report. "Additionally, WebOS' similarities [to] Linux-based PC distributions [make] it a much easier transaction for PC-focused developers to get into mobile apps—something that as the leading PC maker HP should be able to capitalize on and galvanize support for."

Ovum analyst Tony Cripps agreed in an April 29 report, saying, "WebOS could indeed become a major asset for HP and obviously has scope for use on devices such as tablets—Palm's engineers and designers clearly put a lot of time and effort into creating a very slick user experience."

Despite the April 23 resignation of Palm's senior vice president of software and services, Mike Abbott, the continued presence of current Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, as well as other members of WebOS team, has also been pointed to as a coup for HP.

IDC, too, has said it believes that WebOS is positioned well for a "relatively easy migration" to media tablets—a space that IDC expects to grow to 7.6 million units by year's end, and to approach 50 million units by 2014.

"However, unlike in the PC business, [HP's] investment and marketing will not be shared with Microsoft; it will be HP's alone to bear," IDC said in its report. "This acquisition will stress HP's relationship with Microsoft, but given the company's scale and likely continued support of Windows 7 Mobile, it will not seriously damage it."

On April 29, however, TechCrunch, citing "a source who's been briefed on the matter," reported that HP intends to kill its planned "Slate" tablet with Microsoft and to release the device later in 2010 with an adapted version of WebOS. HP has offered no such information.

While Apple, with its newly released and so far successful iPad, has breathed new life into the tablet form factor, Technology Business Research analyst Ken Hyers said he believes the space is still wide open for competition.

"[The] tablet computing space has not yet been well defined by any single manufacturer or OS, giving HP, with its extensive PC manufacturing expertise, a chance to become a key player in the new market segment," Hyers wrote in an April 29 report.

The Palm acquisition gives HP leverage to compete against Apple, Hyers added, in Apple's effort to use the iPad "to redefine the tablet PC space in the same way that it did for digital music players and smartphones."

That said, HP will still have its line of enterprise-geared tablet PCs with Microsoft, as well as a number of iPaq handsets, not to mention PCs, which together should keep the Microsoft-HP relation

Compal PMPs boast WiFi, 7-inch WVGA display, and HD video support

They may not be as stylish or easy to find as the Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet (IMT), but the Compal APA00 (left) and APA01 (right) PMPs aren't really being put to shame by the IMT. In fact, they even occasionally one-up it with features like DVB-T with scheduled recording, FM radio, native HD support up to 1080i, and an SD card slot. The ARM-powered devices have 7-inch 800 x 480 screens like the Archos and run a uCLinux operating system beneath a user interface that includes finger-friendly icons (top row: Music, Video, Photo, DTV, Browser; bottom row: Recorder, Setting, Tool Box, and FM Radio).

Cosmetic differences aside, the two Compal units are basically the same device. Sure, the APA00 is about an ounce heavier than the 20.1-ounce APA01, but both PMPs are still 0.87-inches thick, support a wide range of media formats (including XviD), have removable batteries, and are equipped with a USB 2.0 port, IR sensor (for remote control), TV-out, stereo speakers, and a hard drive up to 80GB. The units can also be configured with 802.11b/g connectivity, though exactly for what purpose is unclear.

There's no word on pricing or availability right now either, but considering that Compal is better known for its ODM/OEM work, there's always a chance that one of these PMPs could show up under a different brand at some point.

The Aigopad of Aigo which I submitted yesterday has now a name. Indeed, the biggest model of the range is called N700 which referred to the size of its 7-inch screen.

Presumably the other two models 5-inch and 4-inch will be logically called Aigo N500, and N400.

Specifications are better than its main competitor the iPad, except the lower resolution due to a smaller screen. However It has lower weight, a USB plug and it supports Flash.

The number one iPad-Killer seems to be Aigo N700, but the price has not been disclosed … grrrrr !

UPDATE: Here is a video of the Tablet PC or MID branded under Taiwanese Compal, according to the video it will have a 16 hours of HD playback, and price contain under $300.

The people involved in sale of lost iPhone revealed

The saga of the lost prototype iPhone started with a 21-year-old Silicon Valley resident who says he regrets not trying harder to find its real owner, according to a published report.

Brian J. Hogan, a 21-year-old resident of Redwood City, Calif., is the person who found the iPhone and was paid by Gizmodo, according to a story published on Thursday by Wired.com.

Hogan's lawyer issued a statement to Wired and said Hogan was in the bar with friends when another patron handed him the phone after finding it on a nearby stool, asked around if anyone owned it, and then left the bar with his friend and the prototype.

Hogan, however, had help in finding a buyer for the phone. CNET has learned that Sage Robert Wallower, a 27-year-old University of California at Berkeley student, contacted technology sites about what is believed to be Apple's next-generation iPhone. The device was lost by an Apple engineer last month. Police in San Mateo County have said they are investigating the lost phone as a possible theft.

Wired reported that police have interviewed Hogan, but that he has not been charged with a crime and that his attorney said he will cooperate with the investigation.

CNET's sources said Wallower, a former Navy cryptologic technician who transferred to UC Berkeley two years ago, acted as a go-between. CNET has learned that there were at least three people involved: Hogan, Wallower, and someone else connected to the sale. Records indicate that Wallower and Hogan may have attended Santa Barbara City College during the same period.

Wallower, who is listed as a member of Berkeley's class of 2010, says in a LinkedIn profile, currently unavailable, that he previously worked as a computer security officer at the publicly traded Securitas corporation and that he possesses "top-secret clearance."

In an in-person interview with CNET at his home in Oakland on Thursday, Wallower said, "I'm not the person who found it. I didn't see it or touch it in any manner. But I know who found it." The aspiring student senator, whose Facebook campaign page appears to have been taken down, has, according to the sources, emerged as one of the central figures in a drama unfolding in a uniquely Silicon Valley way. After Gizmodo published details last week about what it believes was a prototype iPhone, San Mateo County sheriffs raided the home of one of the gadget blog's editors, prompting a debate about whether the warrant complied with California and federal laws curbing newsroom searches. A lawyer for Gizmodo says the gadget blog could sue the sheriff's office.

San Mateo County prosecutors have confirmed that investigators interviewed the person they believe found the prototype in a German beer garden called the Gourmet Haus Straudt.

Stephen Wagstaffe, chief deputy district attorney, declined to confirm whether Hogan was the person who found or sold the iPhone. He did say the felony criminal investigation into possible theft was still going on and that no charges have been filed. "We are still collecting facts," he said.

Under a California law dating back to 1872, any person who finds lost property and knows who the owner is likely to be--but "appropriates such property to his own use"--is guilty of theft. In addition, a second state law says any person who knowingly receives property that has been obtained illegally can be imprisoned for up to one year.

An Amazon.com list, currently unavailable, that appeared to have been created for Wallower by a friend, suggests gifts including a book on climate change by Al Gore, a Kindle, and--perhaps presciently--a book co-authored by ex-hacker Kevin Mitnick titled "The Art of Intrusion: The Real Stories Behind the Exploits of Hackers, Intruders and Deceivers."

Is the HP Win 7 slate already dead?

Update: TechCrunch now reports that the Windows version of HP's slate tablet is indeed dead. Michael Arrington writes: "Hewlett-Packard has killed off its much ballyhooed Windows 7 tablet computer, says a source who's been briefed on the matter."

Second update: An HP PR rep has contacted us via e-mail, saying, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation."

With the news that HP is acquiring Palm, one hot upcoming device that may get suddenly shifted onto the back burner is the company's iPad-style tablet. The device is referred to in marketing materials as the "slate," but still lacks a formal name.

We first saw the slate at CES 2010, in the hands of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. After that, we saw a high-profile promotional video in early April, a mere 48 hours after the iPad's debut. That promo video, though not exactly real-world footage, touted all those extras, from Flash to a Webcam, that are missing from the iPad. HP also set up a mailing list page where one could sign up to receive updates on the slate.

A few weeks later, HP hooks up with Palm, and the status of the slate is one of the first things people want to know about. According to the Silicon Alley Insider:

An analyst asked what HP would be doing with its iPad rival. HP's Todd Bradley responded, "We haven't made roadmap announcements," but that HP will explain its Slate plans in more detail when the Palm deal closes.

That's not a particularly revealing quote, but it certainly seems like a Palm-powered tablet with WebOS instead of Windows makes a lot of sense (to us and others), at least theoretically. Especially, as the choice of a low-power Z-series Intel Atom processor in the current HP tablet (according to internal company documents) made us wary of the tablet's chances as a full-featured iPad killer.

Two Verizon Executives Receive '2010 Ones to Watch' Awards From CIO Magazine and CIO Executive Council

NEW YORK, NY — Two Verizon executives have been selected as recipients of the 2010 CIO Ones to Watch award from IDG's CIO magazine and CIO Executive Council.

Ruchir Rodrigues, vice president – product development – Verizon, and Craig Young, vice president – Verizon Wireless IT, were among 25 rising stars in information technology nationwide who have been honored for bringing leadership, innovation and value to their organizations.

Rodrigues and Young will accept their awards at the CIO Ones to Watch ceremony on Monday (May 3) in Colorado Springs during CIO magazine's Leadership Event. Both are also featured in the current issue of CIO magazine.

"Ruchir and Craig exemplify the depth of talent, innovation and accomplishment of Verizon's entire IT organization, and we are proud that these awards recognize their efforts that benefit our customers and our shareholders," said Shaygan Kheradpir, executive vice president and chief information officer of Verizon.

Rodrigues is responsible for the development of new FiOS-based (fiber-optic) services for voice, data and video. He leads the design and development of interactive media and entertainment services and was instrumental in leading the development of the Interactive Media Guide used by customers of Verizon's FiOS TV. Rodrigues is also responsible for initiatives across Verizon's wireline business segment to reduce operating costs and improve efficiencies.
