Friday’s Pick and Mix #3

GLOBAL – We’ve very nearly reached the end of a busy week here at Conversations, and that means it’s time to lift our eyes from our notebooks, take a look around and point out some of the great articles that have appeared on other blogs and sites around the Web.

Go and visit the links, then come back and tell us what you think.

* Last week, Nokia hosted the ‘Open for Ideas’ event for journalists, highlighting some of the innovative ideas in the pipeline. The chaps from All about Symbian and The Really Mobile Project had a particularly good time in Nokia’s Experience Lounge, where it showcases both future concept pieces and memorabilia from yesteryear. They produced this video to record the visit.
* The Centre for Global Development’s podcast focused this week on how mobile can relieve intense poverty and the four main ways that this can happen. Meanwhile, Solutions Journal looked into some ways that this is already happening in East Africa. And here’s ict-km on the idea of m-agriculture – how mobiles are changing farming in poorer areas.
* Here’s mobiThinking on some of the reasons that mobile money – m-wallets, m-commerce, m-tickets and so forth are all set to become the next big thing.
* We’ve had a pretty eco-friendly week here, with the launch of Eco Profiles, the Nokia Bicycle Charger and the video results from the ‘Easy to be Green’ competition. Let’s top that off with a reminder that recycling your old mobile is a really important part of the process. Tomorrow (June 5) is World Environment Day, y’know.
* Lastly, and also enviro-related, are mobile phones responsible for the disappearance of bees, as has been widely reported over the last week or so? Answer: no.

Show romanization Samsung may launch its mobile advertising platform

Probably after the presentation of the platform IAD Apple, Samsung is also planning to integrate and create their own form of advertising within its own operating system. Although this is an area still very immature, advertisements on mobile platforms could be a formula very profitable in the near future.

Samsung, unlike Apple and Google would want to create an infrastructure from scratch and then not to acquire a company already operating in the market. His platform could be used not only for mobile phones, even for the TV and many other devices. The aim is to offer many free services thanks to revenue from banner ads.

It is currently only an indiscretion, and nothing is certain, but this area is in an exponential growth phase and could rise to new investments.

It’s Easy to be Green – The winning ideas

ESPOO, FInland - A couple of months ago, we launched the Easy to be Green campaign with the Nokia Environmental team. We charged you with the task of proposing your greenest, most earth-loving ideas with your mobile for a chance to have your storyboard premiered right here on Conversations. Hundreds of you got your creative juices going, but there can only be one, well this time, two winners and here they are in their own environmentally friendly videos. Join us after the jump for the world premier.

Congratulations to both K. Srikapardhi and Anna Gadomska. With the contest, we were looking for small, sustainable things you can do with your mobile that are easy to do and can have a positive impact on the planet. Two ideas jumped out: K. Srikapardhi’s idea to drive less and save fuel by using the navigation on your mobile, and Anna Gadomska’s idea to save energy by using your mobile’s video call feature instead of a separate webcam and desktop with a large LCD screen.

Along with having their ideas turned into a motion picture, the pair will also receive a Nokia 5630 XpressMusic device (or similar depending on regional variations). It’s a device packed with an army of green credentials including a Power Save mode, an ‘ Unplug Charger’ reminder, and Nokia’s high efficiency charger. The device also includes eco content and services: eco bookmarks, content and personalisation, eco tips in tutorial, maps for route optimisation, and more available on Ovi Store.

But enough about the loot, grab the popcorn, settle down for the premier of the pair’s winning ideas transformed into animated videos.

Note: The case example in the video was based on the ©NAVTEQ Navigation Benefits Study (2009).

Note: The case example in the video is calculated by testing Nokia E71 and a typical desktop computer used in Nokia. The test for E71 was done via direct video call service, while on the PCs, the test was done with a Skype Client. The energy use is measured only in terminals.

What do you guys think? Impressed by the pair’s environmental use of their grey matter? Have any mother-earth-saving ideas to share? Go ahead and let us know in the comments section below.

Dell to Sell Streak Android Tablet for $500 in July

Dell exec Ron Garriques at the D8 conference says the company will begin selling its Google Android-based Streak hybrid tablet in the United States for $500 at the end of July. The 5-inch tablet-smartphone combination mobile device will be available unlocked through Dell.com. Garriques implies that Dell may also partner with a wireless carrier to sell the device. A subsidized Streak could attract buyers reluctant to invest in an iPad.

Dell plans to begin selling its Google Android-based Streak hybrid tablet device in the United States for $500 at the end of July.

Ron Garriques, president of Dell's Communication Solutions Group, at the D8 conference June 2 said Dell will sell the 5-inch tablet-smartphone combination unlocked through Dell.com.

Garriques also implied that Dell would partner with a wireless carrier to sell the device, with that price being a "carrier decision."

Carriers would presumably sell the Streak subsidized with a two-year contract the same way they sell mobile phones, making the device more affordable for consumers.

AT&T and Verizon Wireless sell high-end smartphones that would cost $500 or $600 for $200 or less with two-year contracts and $100 rebates. Expect the same treatment for the Streak.

Unlocked for $500, the Streak costs as much as the base Apple iPad. Subsidized, the Streak could prove more attractive for Web surfers baulking at buying an iPad.

Garriques described the Streak, which sports a capacitive, WVGA touch screen and 5-megapixel camera, runs a custom build of Android and is powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon processor, as a "business-first product," noting that he began using it in earnest three months ago.

He said he has been using the device, which supports WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity, for phone calls, texting, Web browsing and corporate e-mail and directory (that means Microsoft Exchange support).

For his demo, Garriques connected the Streak to a TV via the HDMI output slot and a docking station. This is a big deal for users who want to bring their TV content with them, but wish to watch it on a larger screen. He said the dock will ship with the Streak at no extra charge.

Garriques said Dell's goal with the Streak was to create a device that provided a satisfactory Web browsing experience that users could still store in their top pockets when they're on the go.

Not as full-bodied as an iPad and too big to be an effective smartphone, this hybrid device has caused some analysts to suggest that the Streak may have trouble finding traction in a market that demands definition.

Meanwhile, users will be able to buy the Streak in the United Kingdom through carrier O2 and at The Carphone Warehouse beginning June 5, and later in June at Dell.co.uk. Dell provided full specs for the Streak here.

iPad Rivals: Over a Dozen Windows and Android Tablets Shown at Computex

Companies showed off over a dozen new rivals for the iPad at Computex this year, including a nifty 10-inch touchscreen tablet that docks into a speaker from Compal Electronics.

The number of tablets at Computex Taipei 2010 pays testimony to the trend Apple set in motion in April. Now that the company has sold 2 million iPads in just under two months, PC vendors globally want a piece of the action.

In the weeks leading up to Computex, it appeared Google might sweep the show with Android-based tablets, but Microsoft swooped in with some key victories and the launch of Windows Embedded Compact 7 software for small devices.

One company that says it will make tablets using Android, Windows and the MeeGo software developed by Intel and Nokia, also showed off one of the neatest devices at Computex, complete with its own user interface (UI) and speaker-dock.

Compal Electronics, the world's second largest contract maker of laptop computers, unveiled a sleek Android-based tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen and a stereo speaker it docked into. The UI is similar to Acer's Shell UI, which works on Android smartphones. The UI simplifies navigation by making the home screen a room full of objects the user taps using the touchscreen. Tapping a stereo icon, for example, starts music playing.

Demand for tablets has risen thanks to the iPad, Compal CEO Ray Chen said at the show, adding that, "we have a lot of customers that are very interested in tablets."

The company's tablet uses Android version 2.1 and is on offer to PC vendors worldwide. Compal creates designs for vendors to choose from, then manufactures the devices at factories in China.

Acer, the world's second-biggest PC vendor, offered a glimpse of its own prototype Android tablet just prior to Computex, at a news conference in Beijing. It has a 7-inch display and a keypad, but Acer didn't say when it might be released or how much it will cost.

Foxconn reference designSeveral smaller Taiwanese and Chinese companies had Android-based tablets at their Computex booths, including Browan Communications, Firstone Technology, Digitran and FuJian Sanxi Electronics.

7-inch Prowave LifepadArm Holdings, which designs the processing cores popular in Android devices, estimates there will be about 40 tablet devices made using Arm-based processors this year, and several e-readers.

"Android has become remarkably popular in a short space of time," said Tudor Brown, president of Arm, at a news conference in Taipei.

10-inch Malata tabletThree Android tablets were on display at Arm's private showroom at Computex:

Foxconn's N928-1 with a 10-inch touchscreen, the Lifepad by Prowave with a 7-inch touchscreen and Wanlida Group's Malata brand tablet with a 10-inch touchscreen.

Wind Pad 110Micro-Star International (MSI) also showed off an Android-based tablet PC called the Wind Pad 110 at a news conference, but the company will launch a Windows-based tablet first, a strategy some of its rivals also announced.

MSI Wind Pad 100MSI's Wind Pad 100 has Microsoft's Windows 7 on board, a 10-inch display and a UI developed by MSI. It also features built-in 3G and Wi-Fi, GPS and HDMI high-definition video output. It will be available later this year.

Asustek Computer (Asus) also debuted its first tablets, two Eee Pads running Windows software.

A tablet PC from Asustek with Android on board was displayed at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) early this year, but the device did not appear at Computex. Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih said he's not sure the market is ready yet for Android-based tablets.

The Eee Pad EP121 sports a 12-inch touchscreen and has Microsoft's Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor inside

Shih said the launch of the iPad has created a unique opportunity for tablet-style devices and he expects demand for such products to grow this year.

Apple launched the iPad on April 3 in the U.S. and last week started selling them overseas in markets including Australia, Germany, Japan and the U.K.

Computex is one of Asia's largest electronics trade shows. The exhibition usually offers a view of what products consumers will see on world markets later this year.

* HD 720p video recording @ 24fps with continuous auto focus
* Symbian OS 9.4 S60 5th, topped with a custom-brewed homescreen and media menu
* 720 MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX dedicated graphics accelerator
* Quad-band GSM support
* 3G with HSDPA 10.2Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps support
* Wi-Fi b/g; DLNA
* GPS with A-GPS support
* microSD card slot (up to 16GB, 8GB card in the box)
* Built-in accelerometer; Turn-to-mute
* TV out
* Wisepilot navigation software preinstalled (30 day trial)
* Four-row QWERTY keyboard
* Office document viewer
* Stereo FM Radio with RDS; TrackID
* microUSB and stereo Bluetooth v2.0
* Web browser with full Flash support
* Decent audio quality

Main disadvantages:
* Camera downgraded from 8MP on the regular Vivaz
* No camera lens protection
* The S60 5th edition UI isn't the best in usability
* No auto locking of the screen during a call
* No DivX or XviD support out-of-the-box
* No smart or voice dialing
* No secondary videocalling camera

We’ve had plenty of positive things to say about the Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro and some not so positive. In the end, it’s how the pros and cons balance. It looks like a simple trade-off: still camera downgraded, QWERTY keyboard added. But hey, keeping the compact size is quite an achievement.

The hardware QWERTY is the obvious improvement over the vanilla Vivaz. The still cameras are in different leagues but the 5MP snapper on the Vivaz pro is very near the best in class and the 720p video capabilities haven’t suffered.

The thickness and weight went up, but in the world of slide-out QWERTY the thickness is to be expected and the weight of the Vivaz pro is more than reasonable. The Motorola MILESTONE is slimmer (13.7mm) but weighs a good 48 grams more. In fact, the Vivaz pro is 3 grams lighter than even the petite Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro.

The software side of things is unchanged from the first Vivaz. We like what Sony Ericsson have done with the homescreen, the media and the camera UI but Symbian S60 5th edition has a few updates that still haven’t made their way to the Vivaz pro – basic usability upgrades like kinetic scrolling in list and grid menus.

It’s hard to find a competing phone with both hardware QWERTY and 720p video recording, but if you’re willing to go down to D1 or VGA video, there’s quite a lot to choose from.

An option from Sony Ericsson is the XPERIA X10 mini pro. It’s super compact and uses the more touch-friendly Android OS (though only v1.6 Donut) and has a respectable 600MHz CPU. The camera is 5MP again but the video is no match at VGA@30fps. So, there are some compromises to be made when picking the X10 min pro over Vivaz pro, but the diminutive size and better OS are two compelling points in X10 mini pro’s favor.

While we are on the subject of Android, we can’t help but mention the Motorola MILESTONE (a.k.a. DROID Stateside). It’s slightly thinner and the 3.7-inch screen of 480x854 pixel resolution is brilliant. The keyboard is excellent and there’s an 8GB microSD card in the box. The major downside is that the MILESTONE records videos in D1@30fps tops.

If you insist on having both 720p video recording and a hardware QWERTY, the alternatives to the Vivaz pro are very few. Unless you happen to live in South Korea (in which case, check out the LG Optimus Q), the only real alternative oddly enough seems to be the Microsoft Kin Two.

It’s got a bigger (though slightly lower-res) screen, an 8GB built-in memory expandable by a microSD card slot. The camera is an 8MP sharpshooter with 720p video recording. The whole thing runs on NVIDIA’s Tegra platform, but the OS is much more limited than Symbian. It does have all its social networking bases covered though.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro is not perfect, but the camera is keeping it afloat. Still images are good enough and 720p video is a premium feature to have on a phone. The QWERTY keyboard is the real premise though for the existence of the Vivaz pro. Users like to have a choice, and makers seem to understand that. Even if it means investing into niche products. The Vivaz pro will appeal to the always-connected crowd, and sometimes that’s just enough for a handset to do well.

By 2015, 75% of WCDMA Base Stations Will Be HSPA+ Capable

“By the end of 2010, 20 LTE networks are expected to have flicked the 'on' switch, but it may surprise many that LTE will only make up 11% of installed base stations by the end of 2015,” says Jake Saunders, VP for forecasting at ABI Research. “LTE population coverage will have crept up to 600 million by 4Q-2012, but 4G marketing hype will precede 4G reality for several years to come.”

4G has a number of elegant solutions embedded in the technology, but the reality is that 4G spectrum awards will occur in a fragmented manner and will need to pass legislative and legal challenges in many markets. In fact for many emerging markets, “4G mobility” is still very much an “out there” concept. Some markets in South America and Africa have yet to consolidate their 3G spectrum awards. Of those carriers that have 3G licenses, many are being pragmatic: they have deployed HSDPA and HSUPA. Furthermore, 50 carriers have installed HSPA+, which enables speeds of up to 56 Mbps. ABI Research estimates that by 2015, 75% of WCDMA-capable base stations will have had the HSPA+ upgrade. In 2012 alone, equipment spending on HSPA+ will be 11% of total equipment expenditure.

Vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, and Huawei can still get mileage out of selling 3G and 3.5G equipment. While the proportion of greenfield base stations has dropped, there is still a need to upgrade existing sites. Consider India. There has been a spending hiatus as carriers clarify which “Circles” they secured. The conclusion of 3G licensing in India should now see carriers getting out their checkbooks again.

Overall in 1Q-2010, operators demonstrated a subdued appetite for equipment despite the economic rebound in 2H-2009. In many countries, governments gave grants to in-market carriers as part of an overall “economic stimulus package.”

“4G equipment spending will be very much welcomed,” adds Aditya Kaul, practice director. “But vendors are also targeting the remaining emerging market for 3G, and also securing 3.5G framework agreements. That should improve vendor earnings in the latter half of 2010.”

Broadcom talks about growing opportunities in wireless

Michael Hurlston, senior vice president and general manager for the Home and Wireless Networking Business Unit at chip specialist Broadcom recently sat down with Digitimes to share his outlook for the wireless networking industry for 2010 and beyond.

Q: I think the general consensus among everyone in the PC industry is that 2010 is going to be a year of rebirth and growth after the downturn of the past 12 months or so. What are some of the highlights you've seen so far this year, and what is your outlook for the future?

A: In netbook and notebooks we've seen quite a bit of lift. Overall the PC market grew a little bit, even in the face of the recession, but if you look at the numbers, what happened was that desktop numbers actually declined quite appreciably, while notebooks and netbooks increased to more than offset the decline.

Total growth last year, depending on who's numbers you believe, was somewhere between 1-8%, but notebooks and netbooks, which is of course the sub-segment that affects us the most saw quite a bit of growth overall.

One of the big drivers for us was a single module solution we came up with that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology. We've seen increasing desire for Bluetooth, because of applications like Skype headsets, or wireless mice and keyboards. To leverage that we came out with our InConcert series, a family of single card/module solutions which combine Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips on the same module, and that obviously saves our customers money and space. We've been very happy with our increased attach rate of Bluetooth in the PC sub-segment in particular.

Another highlight that is also closely related to the PC segment was in the printer segment. The printer segment as a whole seems to be flat or probably has fallen over the past three or so years, people aren't really refreshing their printers as fast as they were two or three years ago. But the attach rate of wireless is more than offsetting the decline in TAM (total addressable market), so that's been relatively surprising.

Q: Intel recently changed its branding strategy for notebooks from Centrino, which helped promote its own Wi-Fi solutions; to its new Core branding which is more about the CPU. How has this affected the wireless-for-notebooks market?

A: It has changed the market significantly. We entered the notebook wireless chip market, I believe, in early-2004, and Intel started Centrino around the middle of that year. By the end of the year, or early 2005, they had, by my estimates, something like 70% of the overall market.

I think at this moment the Intel proportion of the market is 20%, maybe lower. What's that's done is open up a huge portion of the market to players like ourselves. In addition, once you start to consider the netbook-phenomenon where Intel wireless really never had a presence, and now tablet PCs, you can see the opportunity for silicon players in the total portable space has really grown, particularly over the last 12-18 months.

Q: But do you think this is a long-term trend? Some might suggest that the recent spike is simply the result of companies trying to feel out the market, basically playing one suppliers off another to earn better quotes, now they have less of a financial incentive to stick with Intel.

A: Actually, even before Intel backed off on Centrino interest had already waned significantly. I think that the vector for Intel has been down for a while, while the non-Intel portion of the market is still growing. This means there is still opportunity of us.

Having said that, Intel may make a push again in wireless since we are hearing they are investing more in Wi-Fi and are trying to compete on a merchant basis. So the picture may change in another six months, but at least near-term we feel fairly good about the opportunity.

Q: The big thing at Computex this year seems to be tablet PCs, what does Broadcom have to offer in this segment?

A: Tablets are another great opportunity for us. What you see typically is that when it's an organization that does both handsets and computers, whether that is Hewlett-Packard (HP), or Lenovo, or Acer, or Apple, tablets are coming from the cellular side of their business. And we have a huge position of strength in the cellular market.

Also what you're seeing right now is that most of the tablets look to combine Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on a single chip combo, and that's really a position of strength for us too. We're very excited about the tablet market in general. If that portion of the market takes off it's going to be great for us.

As an aside, Broadcom as a company is also investing in the processor for tablets (snapdragon). So we believe very strongly in the market, we're investing in more than just the connectivity, and we have a pretty compelling offering. At Computex we are demonstrating tablets based on the Broadcom processor. We think we've got a roadmap to really compete and add value to OEMs in the tablet space.

Q: Do you see tablets as a new market or are they going to cut into your current wireless chip markets?

A: There are two components. I think you are right that tablets will cannibalize some portion of our current markets. I believe that will be in netbooks first, where we will see consumers purchasing either a netbook or a tablet, and there may be some cannibalization on the cellular side too, but that's probably going to be much smaller.

But there's also an additive component. What we're seeing at least near-term with products like the iPad, is that demand is mostly additive, that is consumers are buying tablets to go alongside their current PCs and devices since they are something new.

Q: What's your outlook for the router/modem segment?

A: In the telco space we recently launched a single chip that combines DSL and 2x2 8082.11n. As a company we believe we should try to integrate as many of these technologies as possible. I think you'll see more of that in the future, where we're combining DSL, or some of our TV or set-top box (STB) offerings with Wi-F.

In general we've seen a very nice uptake in our telco business, the attach rates for Wi-Fi in both DSL and cable modems are increasing. For DSL modems right now, some analysts are saying the attach percentage for Wi-Fi is greater than 50%, and we certainly subscribe to that number. In fact in our estimation, closer to 60% of DSL CPEs have wireless.

For cable modems the adoption of wireless is a bit slower, it's in the 10% range, but DOCSIS 3.0 is bringing about a big change in the industry, and with that we're seeing customers (that is the service providers) start asking for Wi-Fi as a specification of their new cable modems. We expect the attach rate of Wi-Fi in these new DOCSIS 3.0 modems approach 50% by the end of 2011.

Finally, in this segment there are retail routers, or home routers, the products from companies like Cisco, Buffalo, Belkin, Netgear etc. That market has declined a bit over the past few years, but recently we have seen a nice revitalization.

Companies have changed their messaging so that rather than talking about "speeds and feeds" they're repositioning to try and target the segment of the market today that has a broadband connection but doesn't have wireless in the home. The router companies believe that in order to communicate to that segment of consumers they need to talk about routers in more familiar terms, for example, "music routers", "video routers", and "data routers". The result has been a significant lift in the overall market. We've seen some nice growth over the last quarter or two quarters.

Q: It has only been a couple of year since you started shipping products for the mobile sector, how are things progressing there?

A: The truly mobile products, that is handheld products: handheld games, handheld entertainment devices, and obviously the cellular phone market has exploded over the last two years. We had our first shipments into the portable market, what we call the mobility business, in the middle of 2008, and now in 2010 this is one of the most important businesses, not only for us in Wi-Fi, but really for Broadcom as a company.

One of the key things that we've done in this particular segment is we combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth into a single chip. We found that the attach rate in the cellular market means that any phone that's going to ship with Wi-Fi, will also by default have Bluetooth.

We decided to enter this market with a family of combination chips and that's really catalyzed the entire market. When we entered the attach rate for Wi-Fi in cell phones was in the very low single-digits. Now, some market estimates have it as much as 20%; we think it's probably in the 15%-20%, but obviously it's growing.

Market analysts are predicting that the attach rate for Wi-Fi will approach that of Bluetooth (which is currently 60%) over the next few years. What that trajectory means is that around 2013-2014 greater than 50% of handsets will have Wi-Fi.

Handsets is obviously a critical market for us, in our last earnings call we talked about shipping now on all five of the top-five major handset makers. We have a very strong position with High Tech Computer (HTC), and we're doing very well with Apple. We feel like our cellular phone business is really a position of strength for us, and is something we expect to leverage going forward. It's a key area of investment for us.

The other sub-segment of the mobile market is mobile gaming. It's a category that's probably not growing as much, but it's still an important segment. Wi-Fi is nearing a 100% attach in the portable games consoles like the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, so we see opportunity there. And for portable entertainment devices whether it be the iPod, or a mobile video player of some variety, again Wi-Fi is becoming nearly ubiquitous there, and so this represents another significant opportunity for us as we're nearing the point we every device has Wi-Fi.

Q: Does that mean to say they all have Broadcom Wi-Fi?

A: Unfortunately no. In the portable gaming category we're not doing too well there, neither of the two main SKUs have our Wi-Fi. In the portable entertainment segment it's a mixed bag. We've done very well with Apple and that represents a nice proportion of the market. But for other products from Sony, Panasonic and other makers in Japan, some of those we have, others we don't. Our success rate you could say in this segment is a bit more checkered than the cellular segment, but then that means there is plenty of opportunity for us in the future.

Q: In an interview with Digitimes last year you talked a lot about the over the top (OTT) video segment. How is that progressing?

A: The OTT segment, just to refresh, is typically Internet content, things like movie services (Netflix, Amazon.com Direct Online, etc.), YouTube, and widgets, for example the weather, or a stock ticker, coming to a consumer electronics device. What we are seeing for this category is a surprising attach rate. With televisions now, almost every vendor I can think of has Wi-Fi in some portion of their product lineup. We announced recently that Mitsubishi has both our Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in their products. The trend is one of very high growth.

If you think about a Blu-ray player, which is a key end-device we're attempting to serve with OTT, we're expecting to see the attach rate of Wi-Fi reach greater than 50% going into the 2010 holiday season based on trajectory and the designs we see in the pipe.

The TV attach rate is lower today, it varies by vendor to vendor, for some Wi-Fi is only seen in the high-end, while there's others like Visio that have Wi-Fi almost top-to-bottom across their range. Overall, there is a very strong trend of having networking built directly into the TV for these kinds of OTT services.

I think we've done very well as a company in this business. Of course Broadcom has TV chipsets, and Blu-ray chipsets, which gives us a platform on which our Wi-Fi can ship, but because our solution is very well geared to OTT, we've also done well on non-Broadcom TV or Blu-ray platforms. No CE customers I can think of are shipping a device without Broadcom Wi-Fi.

Q: Why is wireless becoming so popular, can't people just use Ethernet?

A: OTT services can be provided by LAN, but the issue we see is that the presence of an Ethernet jack near a Blu-ray player or television set is not common. So what we are seeing is wireless SKUs far outselling wired-only SKUs.

An example of this is last holiday season there were basically three flavors of Blu-ray player: very cheap models costing less than US$100 with no networking at all, an Ethernet flavor that was US$129-US$149, and then higher-end models that were close to US$179-US$199 which included both Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

What we saw was that the high-end SKU typically accounted for 40%-50% of overall sales, the cheap, non-networked SKU was on the order of 30%-40% of overall sales, and then the mid-range SKU had 10%-20% of overall sales.

What's interesting about this is that you normally expect that the higher the dollar value, the lower the percentage of overall sales, but what we saw was the wireless networking SKUs doing better. This was because most people wanted these OTT services when they bought their Blu-ray players, but most also didn't have an Ethernet jack nearby and so they were buying the full wireless version, even though it was often US$50 more expensive.

Q: What's next for your unit? Are there any new opportunities on the horizon?

A: We're obviously looking now at markets that are emerging. One people are talking about is using Wi-Fi in SmartPower or SmartGrids. There are a lot of initiatives throughout the world in terms of energy usage, and networking in appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines etc., to control energy usage. In the US, and I think also in Taiwan and other parts of Asia, a rollout of SmartMeters has begun that provides information back to the utility companies relative to a consumer's energy usage. The next phase is for the utilities to provide information back to the house, such as rates, or for example providing information to the consumer that a rolling blackout is about to occur so they can prepare to shut down their appliance, or even do it automatically.

We're also seeing opportunity in user interface devices such as remote controls, mice and keyboards. These days a lot of these devices use a proprietary wireless signal or sometimes Bluetooth, but we see a very strong opportunity for Wi-Fi to expand into this area too.

So the general message is that we see a new trend for super small devices that include a simple processor on the chip to host the OS and control the Wi-Fi. This market could be as big, if not bigger than the markets I've mentioned already.

Q: We've talked a lot about wireless communications, but your unit also covers GPS. What's your outlook for the GPS market?

A: Obviously GPS is an important business for us. In fact it's one of the fastest growing businesses for the company. GPS is interesting for us because it spans a lot of different applications. One of the most interesting has been the PC segment, we've recently seen SKUs that include GPS in the notebook enter the market and do very well, and as a result other PC makers are following quickly behind.

I think in the cellular space we've done very well in GPS. There is an effect in the cellular space that because some baseband chips already have GPS integrated; it means there's a portion of the market more difficult for us to attack. But that is still a relatively small portion of the market, and the portion of the market that doesn't have cellular baseband/GPS is a very high growth segment. We're still seeing numbers in the cellular segment growing, and for that area we have offerings where we've combined Bluetooth and GPS in a single chip.

We're also seeing GPS going into embedded segments. For example people are talking about sensors for inside navigation in malls.

We're seeing applications for GPS in the in-car PND market expand too. There have been reports that in-car GPS is on the decline, and I think it will decline as you see an increase in cellular GPS, but at least at this moment we are seeing the market continue to grow.

MIPS-based Android phone expected in 2011

At a hotel suite during Computex 2010, MIPS Technologies updated several developments about its Android-supporting processor architecture.

MIPS said it expects to see the first 4G Android handset on its CPU architecture hit the market by 2011. MIPS did not elaborate on details of the device, but said it looks to expand into the segment that has been dominated by ARM.

The IP licensing firm also revealed that a new customer in APAC is now developing a MIPS-based mobile processor for 3G/4G base stations.

MIPS and SySDSoft have developed an LTE protocol stack ported to the Android platform, according to MIPS. Benchmark results of the SySDSoft LTE protocol stack running on MIPS-Based Android and Linux platforms achieve nearly theoretical maximum CAT4 data throughput with small packet sizes, low CPU operating frequency and low power. With higher upload/download throughput and similar or better performance compared to the competitive solution running at 500MHz, these are believed to be the highest-performance results for such small packet sizes running on a 350MHz core, MIPS claimed.

MIPS also announced symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support for the Android platform running on MIPS-based multicore SoCs. Now MIPS licensees using MIPS32 multi-threaded and multiprocessor cores can bring rich web and multimedia content to smartphones with the Android platform, the company said.

In addition, MIPS said ViXS Systems and Silicon Integrated System (SiS) have joined a growing list of companies leveraging Android on the MIPS architecture to create next-generation connected entertainment devices. SiS has licensed IP from MIPS for SoCs targeting mobile Internet device (MID) applications, while ViXS is demonstrating at the ongoing Computex 2010 the Android platform running on its MIPS-based XCode 4200 family of integrated chipsets for digital home products including Blu-ray disc players, IPTV/cable/satellite set-top boxes (STBs) and other consumer entertainment devices.

MIPS in August 2009 published the source code of its port of Android for the MIPS architecture, in a move to define standardized Android-based platforms for consumer devices such as STBs, digital TVs, MIDs, home media players and VoIP systems. ALi and Sigma Designs are among MIPS's ecosystem partners.

China market: 3G connections to grow at CAGR of 160% from 2010-14, says Ovum

According to a new report from consulting firm Ovum, to continue the strong mobile revenue growth seen in China, operators are driving 2G to 3G migrations in saturating urban markets. In the medium-term, 3G mobile data and value-added services are the path to urban revenue growth.

Ovum predicts 3G connections will increase to 69 million in 2010, due to ambitious 3G subsidy plans by the three mobile operators. 3G connections will then grow at a CAGR of 160% from 2010 to 2014. "We expect 3G connections to make up around 40% of overall mobile connections by 2014", explained Tracey Chen, Senior Analyst at Ovum.

In particular, the report predicts that connections will move to 3G faster in urban regions, leaving a higher proportion of 2G users in rural areas. Ovum expects overall 2G connections to continue to grow over the next three years, reaching 768 million in 2011. After that, 2G will decline gradually due to migration to 3G.

"Operators will need to rethink their 3G data pricing to achieve their ambitions. The three mobile operators should differentiate their migration strategies by leveraging their respective capabilities", said Chen.

China Mobile's primary imperatives are retaining lucrative 2G users, capturing enterprise users through simple and low-priced mobile services, and accelerating the maturity of the TD-SCDMA ecosystem.

For China Telecom, it is necessary to capture new mobile users by offering fixed/mobile service bundling in both residential and enterprise segments, and to pay more attention on launching low to medium prices for CDMA 2000 handsets to appeal to low-spending users.

China Unicom is aiming to attract high-end users by offering popular handsets, favorable price packages and appealing loyalty plans, as well as using WCDMA's scale to drive its handsets into the medium to low-end market.

In the medium term, new business models and revenue sources will also emerge to aid 3G growth. Relevant value-added services include application stores, mobile advertising, and mobile-payment services.

Although operators are launching application stores of their own, the application stores offered by handset providers will change the ecosystem for mobile content and threaten the leadership of operators in this area. However, Ovum said it believes it is in the interests of participating parties, including content providers, ISPs, operators, and handset providers, to form partnerships to improve growth prospects.

Taiwan handset companies at Computex 2010

With the rise of various consumer electronics exhibitions, Computex Taipei is no longer the time and place for handset companies to release their annual main attractions.

Though many domestic handset makers and vendors do not have their own booths at the show this year, their presence can still be felt via displays at the booths of software and chipset partners. Digitimes took the opportunity to speak with representatives from Taiwan-based handset companies.

According to representatives from Asustek Computer, Garmin-Asus should reach its 2010 shipment target of one million units declared by Asustek chairman Jonney Shih.

It will concentrate on its A and M series, which support Android and Windows Mobile, respectively, and for 2010, Android-based devices will account for the majority of shipments. All models in the near future will continue to run on Qualcomm solutions, the representatives added.

For the China market, Garmin-Asus is working with carrier China Mobile, and plans to introduce an Ophone by the end of the year, according to the company.

The Garmin-Asus G60 smartphone is a winner of the Taiwan Excellence Award given annually to innovative products made by Taiwan-based companies. The G series, which is based on Linux, is no longer the company's main focus.

Asustek representatives emphasized that Garmin-Asus beat HTC in introducing a Windows Mobile 6.5-based smartphone via the introduction of the M10. Apparently, HTC has become the bellwether that other players measure themselves against.

Compared with Garmin-Asus, Acer has a much wider selection in terms of both chipset support and form factors. Acer has continued its popular Ferrari portfolio with a special edition of the Liquid smartphone, which is based on Android 2.1 and Qualcomm's Snapdragon.

Acer is one of the few handset vendors to actually release new models during Computex, such as the Android-based beTouch E400 on Qualcomm's MSM 7227 processor.

Introduced earlier this year, the neoTouch P300 comes in a slide form factor with physical QWERTY keypad.

For operating systems, Acer, while still developing Windows Mobile-based smartphones, has shifted its development focus to the Android platform, with at least half of new models launched in 2010 to be Android-based, according to Digitimes Research.

Acer sold about 500,000 own-brand handsets in 2009 and aims for two million units in 2010 due to strong order for the Liquid smartphone. According to Digitimes Research, it has only sold about 500,000 units thus far this year. Representatives at the booth declined to comment on shipment forecast.

Gigabyte's Gsmart brand introduced the S1205 on Windows Mobile 6.5 in May 2010. Representatives from Gigabyte pointed out that the company definitely has devices running on other operating systems coming up and Russia will be an important market for the company.

Many of you probably haven't heard the terms PDA and PDA phone in a while since these devices are now mostly sold in niche markets for industrial applications. Taiwan-based PCB maker Unitech showcased the PA600 industrial PDA, which supports Windows Mobile 6.1, designed for the health care market.

At the Microsoft booth, there was an Inventec smartphone. There were no representatives from the company or specification information, so it's unclear whether the phone is for the Okwap brand or an ODM design.

The only HTC phones I saw were also displayed at the Microsoft booth, and hence only Windows Mobile devices were available.

When asked whether HTC has other entry-level models for the second half, a company representative kept referring to the introduction of Windows Mobile 7 handsets in the near future but no useful information was provided. Not sure if she was ill informed or being evasive since she was at Microsoft territory. I'd say a little of both.

In the first quarter, HTC introduced the Smart, which supports Qualcomm's Brew platform. It was a good sign that the company is adding products at lower price points to diversify its portfolio.

Verizon Wireless Expands 3G Network Coverage In Rensselaer County, New York

• Improves coverage and capacity in Troy
• Provides access to 3G wireless broadband service
• Meet one of Upstate New York’s local Test Men, Jack Brandes

ALBANY, NY — Verizon Wireless is investing in Rensselaer County and expanding its local coverage with a new cell site in Troy. The new site improves coverage and capacity on Route 7 from Tenth Street to South Lake Avenue, Route 40 from Route 7 to Humiston Avenue and Burdett Avenue from Route 7 to Tibbits Avenue.

This network expansion is part of the company’s aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless’ voice and data services. The company has invested more than $57 billion nationwide since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – and invested more than $100 million in Upstate New York in 2009.

“We’ve always believed even the most advanced device is only as good as the network it runs on. We continue to aggressively invest in our Upstate New York network to increase coverage and capacity for our customers, add new services, and maintain our 3G network leadership,” said Gene Fassett, executive director of Network for Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region.

Verizon Wireless recently earned recognition from J.D. Power and Associates for “Highest Call Quality Performance among Wireless Cell Phone Users in the Northeast.”

Services include wireless data services such as picture messaging, text messaging, V CAST and V CAST Music with Rhapsody, and Mobile Broadband, the company’s high-speed wireless broadband network geared toward mobile professionals and business customers. It provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second, and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps.

Strong demand for Verizon Wireless’ services continued during the first quarter of 2010 as the company added 1.5 million net new customers.

The company’s “nation’s most reliable wireless network” reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and women throughout the country. These engineers drive 100 specially equipped vehicles almost 1 million miles annually on Interstate, U.S. and state highways, as well as major roads and surface streets. Test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically make more than 3.5 million voice call attempts and more than 19 million data tests annually on Verizon Wireless’ network and the networks of other carriers.

Verizon Wireless’ “COLTs” Make Pit Stop At Pocono Raceway In Pennsylvania For NASCAR Weekend

• Verizon Wireless adds mobile cell sites for Pocono 500 race fans
• Will handle the surge in wireless and data usage expected during the big race weekend
• Part of company's commitment to ensuring customers have access to reliable wireless service; more than $1.3 billion invested in regional network since 2000

LONG POND, PA — In readiness for the throng of NASCAR fans expected to descend on the area for this weekend’s Pocono 500, Verizon Wireless will beef up its network capacity by deploying two temporary mobile cell sites known as COLTs (Cell on Light Trucks). Each COLT is a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity, allowing more customers to use their wireless phones – including the latest, advanced smartphones – concurrently to make calls, surf the Internet, update social networking sites, send and receive text and picture messages, and download apps, music, and games. Desktop and laptop computer users will even be able to use Mobile Broadband, the company's wireless broadband service, to surf the Web at high speeds.

"Whether they're looking up a racing statistic, updating their Facebook® status, tweeting updates or sending a picture to a friend, our customers take full advantage of their wireless service to capture the moment, significantly increasing traffic on our local network," said Mario Turco, regional president for Verizon Wireless. "By activating these temporary cell sites, our network is prepared to handle the increased activity that comes with large gatherings. We anticipate a big surge in voice calls, Internet access, text messages and picture messages as attendees use their wireless devices to capture and share the events."

The temporary cell sites are part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless' voice and data services. The company has invested more than $59 billion nationwide since it was formed – $5.7 billion on average every year – including more than $1.3 billion across the region. Verizon Wireless invested more than $163 million to enhance services and coverage across central, northeastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware during 2009. The mobile cell sites are on constant standby to provide additional wireless network capacity and coverage in emergencies and at highly attended scheduled events.
