The NPD Group: Amazon Ties Walmart as Second-Ranked U.S. Music Retailer, Behind Industry-Leader iTunes

Digital music continued to gain on CDs in the first quarter, as iTunes increased its lead in overall U.S. music sales.

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK - According to The NPD Group, a leading market research company, Apple’s iTunes store continued to lead all music retailers, with 28 percent of all music purchased by U.S. consumers — gain of 4 percentage points since Q1 2009. Amazon gained three percentage points to tie Walmart for second position at 12 percent. Based on NPD’s latest music industry research, sales of digital tracks and albums accounted for 40 percent of overall music market share in the first quarter (Q1) of 2010, which is a 5 percentage point gain since Q1 2009. NPD’s data is based on a combined music-retailer ranking that reflects the combined sales of CDs and digital music downloads (i.e., 12 digital music track downloads are equivalent to one CD).

“Amazon’s growth reflects a stronger position in both the CD and digital formats,” said Russ Crupnick, vice president of industry analysis for the NPD group. “This dual-pronged approach of selling both digital music and CDs helps attract the most valuable and committed music buyer who prefers access to both formats.”

When reviewing sales of digital music separately from CDs, NPD’s MusicWatch data revealed that iTunes’s share of the digital-music download retail market has remained essentially flat since Q1 2009 -- growing just one percentage point to reach 70 percent of the digital music market last quarter. At the same time, AmazonMP3 grew by 4 percentage-points to reach 12 percent, while Amazon’s share of the CD market grew by 2 percentage points to reach 11 percent.

In NPD’s review of CD retailers, Walmart led U.S. CD purchases in Q1 2010 with 17 percent share of retail market. Best Buy followed Walmart with 14 percent, Amazon’s 11 percent share positioned them in third place.

“Unfortunately the decline in U.S. CD sales means that selection and merchandising of the physical CDs is suffering, which is one of the primary reasons consumers say they purchased CDs less frequently,” said Crupnick. “Online shopping offers consumers who still want CDs more variety than they would get in a brick-and-mortar store; plus, recommendations, and other interactive features that raise the overall value proposition for music buyers. ”

Data note: The information in this press release is from NPD’s consumer tracking of U.S. consumers, age 13 and older, who reported their purchases of physical product (CDs), digital music, and wireless over-the-air (OTA) transactions -- excluding ringtones. NPD’s combined music retailer ranking reflects combined sales of CDs and digital music downloads, where 12 digital music tracks are equivalent to one CD.

Adobe's Flash video software has become a flashpoint in negotiations between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Big Media.

On a day when Apple execs probably cheered the fact the company had surpassed Microsoft as the world's most valuable tech company, Jobs was grappling with resistance from Tinseltown over Apple's ongoing fight with Adobe.

Sources said several large media companies, including Time Warner and NBC Universal, told Apple they won't retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad, arguing that such a reformatting would be expensive and not worth it because Flash dominates the Web.

Though the iPad has been a huge hit, media companies are feeling emboldened in their rebuffing of Apple by the launch of rival touch-screen tablet devices, such as the ones coming from Dell Computer and Hewlett-Packard, sources said.

In addition, one media executive pointed out that Apple's ability to dictate terms to the media giants will be weakened further by Google TV, a software product that enables viewers to watch online video on their big-screen TVs.

Jobs banned Flash software from running on Apple devices, arguing that the world's most popular video software is unfit for his devices. Instead, he favors video software written in Web software language called HTML5.

Said an Apple spokeswoman, "We believe in open standards like HTML5."

The media companies' refusal to cave in to Jobs marks another setback at a time when Apple has had its share of both good and bad news.

In the plus column, Apple's $221.1 billion market cap yesterday topped Microsoft's $219.2 billion, making it the most valuable tech company. However, Apple is facing scrutiny from the Justice Department over tactics it uses in pricing songs sold on iTunes.

Apple shares closed down $1.17 to $244.05. Microsoft shares fell $1.06 to $25.01.

In the Apple vs. Adobe fight, Big Media's decision not to acquiesce to Apple's demands will be a boon to Adobe, which has gotten beaten up by Jobs' withering criticism of Flash.

Time Warner, in particular, is against the walled-garden, subscription-only model promoted by Apple in part because Time Warner is promoting its "TV Everywhere" initiative, which aims to make content platform agnostic so long as users can prove they are pay-TV customers.

Not surprisingly, Disney, which counts Jobs as its largest shareholder, has created an iPad app that lets users watch ABC shows for free.

CBS, using an iPad-enabled Web browser, is also working with Apple, but to a limited extent, offering only a handful of shows.

Both Fox News (which, like The Post, is owned by News Corp.) and CNN offer free video clips using HTML5 on the iPad.

Motorola's Jha: We Will Introduce New Droid Products For Verizon

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Motorola Inc. (MOT) plans to introduce new Droid smartphones for Verizon Wireless, according to Co-CEO Sanjay Jha.

Motorola benefited from Verizon Wireless's push at the end of last year for the original Droid phone. But with the launch of the Incredible from HTC Corp. ( 2498.TW), Motorola's flagship device has been pushed aside, bringing up the issue of how the company remains competitive with so many other players in the market.

Jha told analysts at an investor conference on Thursday that Motorola's size, brand and software provides it with the differentiation necessary to attract customers. He noted that the company will launch a new version of its Motoblur user interface later this year, and said that the company has made tremendous progress in its transformation to a smartphone maker.

While he would consider creating his own mobile operating system under certain conditions, he said that "nearly all of my focus is on Android today."

One of the problems that handset manufacturers have had to deal with are the constant revisions to Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Android software. Jha said the changes to the underlying framework of the software has made it difficult to upgrade quickly, but added that things are getting easier to update.

He said he would be aggressive introducing Android 2.2 to phones, since it will enable Flash on its phones, which he said was important for the customer's Internet experience.

"Some don't, as I understand," in a thinly veiled shot at Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) stance against Flash on its iPhone and iPad.

On the feature phone side, Jha said he was managing the business for a modest profit, and that he sees the business stabilizing with more volume next year as it starts to benefit from its original equipment manufacturing deal. The company has outsourced the production of low end phones in an effort to maintain its brand in emerging markets, with the hope that customers from those countries will eventually buy a Motorola smartphone.

He said there is tremendous opportunity to sell smartphones to Chinese customers. He noted that demand is lower in Latin America because the networks aren't as advanced, but said he eventually expects growth in that area as well.

Jha, who will take over both the mobile devices and home divisions when the company splits early next year, added he also sees overseas demand for its set- top boxes, and said there remained an opportunity to install more multi-room digital video recorders and high-definition boxes in the U.S.

Jha hinted at the prospect of a Motorola tablet, noting that having a 7 inch to 9 inch display as a companion to a larger television is important, and that the company was "engaged in thinking about the right solution there."

He was also evaluating using Android to run a bigger device such as a TV, but noted he wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea yet.

Motorola shares rose 1.8% to $6.88.

Motorola CEO plans to keep focus on smart phones

Android-based devices remain key as handset maker prepares for spin off.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The co-CEO of Motorola Inc. told investors Thursday morning that the company can carve out a strong piece of the fast-growing smart phone market despite the fact that it lacks its own mobile operating system, which has proven to be a distinct advantage for rivals such as Research In Motion Ltd. and Apple Inc.

When asked whether the company would consider building or acquiring its own OS, Jha said there is always a possibility, but that "nearly all of my focus is on Android today." He noted that any mobile OS would need to be able to match Android's capabilities, including free navigation and voice-activated services.

"I think it's possible to be negatively differentiated by having a platform that does not have those capabilities," he said.

The Droid has been a strong seller at Verizon, which gave the product heavy promotion through the first quarter of this year. However, there has been some concern that a new competing product -- the HTC Incredible -- will eat into sales of the Droid as Verizon shifts its focus to the newer product.

However, Avian Securities told clients in a note Thursday morning that shortages of the HTC Incredible seem to be helping sales of the Droid as the "closest comparable" device to the Incredible.

Jha also indicated strong sales of the company's other handsets. He noted that the company now has more than a million subscribers to its Motoblur service, which helps users integrate social networking services to their mobile devices. The Motoblur service is not available on the Droid.

Motorola is planning to separate into two publicly traded entities by early next year. Jha will continue to run the handset business, which will be combined with the company's cable set-top box business. He said Thursday that plans remain on track to accomplish the spinoff.

One Laptop Per Child's next move: the $100 tablet

One Laptop Per Child organization to shelve the actual laptops, aim for sub-$100 tablet.

The nonprofit organization that has tried for years to produce a sub-$100 laptop for children in the world's poorest places is throwing in the towel on that idea — and jumping on the tablet bandwagon.

One Laptop Per Child's next computer will be based on chipmaker Marvell Technology Group Ltd.'s Moby tablet design. Marvell announced a prototype of the device earlier this year and said it costs about $99.

Nicholas Negroponte, founder of One Laptop Per Child, is optimistic his organization will be able to keep the price under $100 in part because Marvell plans to market its tablets widely to schools and health care institutions.

"We want to see the price drop, and volume is the key to that," Negroponte said.

The quirky green and white XO laptop sold by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) to governments and organizations in countries such as Afghanistan and Uruguay for about $200, on the other hand, wasn't meant for such a broad audience. It also had more moving parts. The physical keyboard had to be customized for students in countries that don't use a Latin alphabet.

Marvell's co-founder, Weili Dai, said the company has also found ways to cut costs in the way it's designing the chips.

The new tablets will have at least one, and maybe two, video cameras. They'll sport Wi-Fi connections to the Internet, "multi-touch" screens and have enough power to play high-definition and 3-D video. Unlike Apple Inc.'s iPad tablet, the device will also work with plug-in peripherals such as mice and keyboards.

Negroponte said he eventually wants the tablets to run some version of the free Linux operating software. But the first generation of the "XO 3.0" tablet will likely use Android, the mobile-device operating system from Google Inc., or something similar.

Although the group, which is based in Cambridge, Mass., worked with Microsoft Corp. to get its Windows operating system running on the XO laptops, Negroponte said the new tablets will not use Windows 7 because the software requires too much memory and computing power.

Negroponte said he plans to unveil the tablet device at the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in January.

The One Laptop Per Child project has its share of skeptics, who have questioned everything from the possibility of manufacturing a laptop for $100 to the point of computers in countries that lack basic infrastructure. Negroponte said the last few months been a turning point.

"People are no longer asking `Does this work?'" Negroponte said. "The one question I hear all the time is, how do I pay for it? How do the economics work?"

Exclusive: Palm Loses Mobile Design Guru Matias Duarte to Google

Looks like Palm is suffering a bit of post-acquisition talent drain.

Mobile user interface master Matias Duarte has left Palm and evidently hired on at the most obvious of places: Google.

Duarte, who led development of Palm’s webOS UI as the company’s senior director of human interface and user experience, has jumped ship, Palm (PALM) confirms. And while the company refuses to tell me where he’s going, multiple sources say it’s Google (GOOG), where he’ll presumably be working on Android, the company’s open-source platform for mobile devices–noncompete clauses permitting, of course.

Duarte’s departure is a significant loss for Palm and new owner Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), which has said it plans to “double down” on webOS. His prowess with user experience and information design is well known in the industry. Before Duarte landed at Palm in 2007, he was design chief at Helio. And prior to that, he led the team that created the Danger Hiptop mobile device. When Palm announced the Pre at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2009, it was Duarte who introduced the design of webOS.

So, as I said, a real loss for Palm as it heads to its new home at HP. And a bittersweet moment for Duarte, who had great hopes for Palm’s reinvention. As he wrote in a 2009 blog post: “When I started in this field, the Palm V was the unquestioned leader in mobile devices. To this day I believe it represents one of the best consumer electronic products ever created. I always aspired to match Palm in simplicity, usability and design–so now that I’m here, I feel like a kid who’s just been handed the keys to Daddy’s convertible.”

Looks like you’ve got the keys to the Segway now, my friend.

Google and Duarte have not yet responded to requests for comment. I will update here if they do.

UPDATE: Google confirms that Duarte has joined Google as User Experience Director for Android. The company declined further comment.

Overview

Steps for loading the MeeGo live image on your netbook, nettop or PC:

1. Download the latest live image.
2. Byte-copy the image to a USB drive.
3. Boot the image on your netbook, nettop or PC.

System Requirements

* CPU: Intel Atom or Intel Core 2 CPU (support for SSSE3)
Note: MeeGo will not work on non-SSSE3 CPUs
* Platforms with the GMA-500, Nvidia, or ATI Graphics chipset are not supported.
* Tested netbook and nettop platforms

About Live Images

The MeeGo live image is designed to be used with a USB drive. A netbook or PC can be booted from the USB drive without modifying its hard drive or configuration. This lets you test drive an image before installing it. When you are done, just remove the USB drive and reboot. If you like what you see, you can then install MeeGo from the same live image.

1 Download the Live Image
The live image is available from the netbook downloads page. Save the image to a known location so you can access it in step 2.
2 Byte-copy the image to a USB drive
You will need a USB drive with at least the capacity of the downloaded image.

Note: A byte-exact copy of the image must be placed on the USB drive. It is not sufficient to simply copy the image file to the drive. Be aware contents of the USB drive will be completely erased.
Linux Instructions

Be sure the USB drive is unmounted before proceeding. Some Linux distributions auto mount the USB drive when it is inserted, which can cause corruption when writing.

Use either of these two methods:

* Image Writer (recommended, requires Python >=2.4)
Image Writer is a small python executable script that detects your USB drive and writes the image to it. The advantage of using image writer is that it will not inadvertently overwrite your system hard drive. Download Image Writer

* Use 'dd' from the command-line
Caution: 'dd' will overwrite any destination including your system hard disk. Make sure you know the correct value of before proceeding.

There is a simple way to put the MeeGo image on a USB drive.

1. Download the Win32DiskImager.exe program: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download (zip file)

3. Run W32DiskImager.exe (screenshot)
4. Select the MeeGo image file (.img)
5. Select the drive letter which corresponds to the USB key
6. Click the "Write" button to byte-copy the image to the USB drive.

Proceed to Step 3: Boot the image
Mac OS X Instructions

Be sure the USB drive is unmounted before proceeding. OS X auto mounts the USB drive when it is inserted, which can cause corruption when writing. You can press the eject icon in Finder or drag the USB icon to the trash.

Use this method (thanks to Many Ayromlou for the instructions):

1. Open a Terminal (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)
2. Run
diskutil list
to get the current list of devices
3. Insert your flash media
4. Run
diskutil list
again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (for example /dev/disk2)
5. Run
diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN

(replace N with the disk number from the last command; in the previous example, N would be 2)
6. Run
sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/diskN bs=1024
(replace /path/to/downloaded.img with the place you downloaded the image. You'll need your password for this.
7. Run
diskutil eject /dev/diskN
(where N is the number we found above) and remove your flash media when the command completes
8. You're done! Proceed to Step 3: Boot the image

3 Boot the image on your netbook, nettop, or PC
Insert the USB drive into your netbook, nettop or PC and reboot. Make sure that the boot order tries the USB drive first.

Today we are announcing the project release of MeeGo v1.0. This release provides developers with a stable core foundation for application development and a rich user experience for Netbooks. The MeeGo Netbook user experience is the first to appear, with the development of the MeeGo Handset user experience moving to the open in June.

MeeGo Netbook Myzone

Releases are planned on a six month cadence. MeeGo v1.1 will be released in October and it will include support for touch-based devices, such as Handsets, Tablets, and In-Vehicle Infotainment systems. The development tree for MeeGo v1.1 is now open and we will start releasing various components in the v1.1 tree, including opening the development of the handset user experience in June.

We are now releasing the MeeGo API which includes Qt 4.6, the MeeGo SDK with an integrated application development environment, and various other operating system tools. Currently, the MeeGo SDK is focused on Netbooks, but the next version of the MeeGo SDK, an early developer release in June, will support touch-based devices, such as Handsets and Tablets.

Arbitron Inc. Declares Quarterly Dividend; Holds Annual Stockholders' Meeting

COLUMBIA, Md. -- The board of directors of Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) has approved the payment of a quarterly cash dividend of $0.10 (ten cents) per common share. The dividend will be paid on or about July 1, 2010 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on June 15, 2010.

Acer CEO shows off 7-inch Android tablet

Before the Acer event started this morning I was reading through the press pack and in there was a piece about the LumiRead e-book reader. It looks very much like other e-book readers and in the style of Kindle it has a physical keyboard below the display. Monochrome 6-inch display, 2GB memory, MicroSD card slot and you’ve pretty much got what it was all about.

I wasn’t very excited.

The e-book reader was shown on stage and still not much excitement. But my attention and that of everyone else quickly arrived when Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci pulled out something looking very much like the LumiRead but he said it was a tablet.

Indeed, Lanci showed off a 7-inch tablet running Android. We weren’t given much more information than that other than he said it had color screen (which we could also see obviously) and would arrive in Q4. Price was not yet determined and in talking about how they would go to market with it, he said they had not decided between traditional channels or operators. He said that operators were an “obvious” option, hinting at the tablet having a 3G connection, something he didn’t confirm.

I’ve been wondering why companies such as Acer have not yet introduced something rivaling Apple’s iPad and I’m still confused as they said this would arrive in Q4. Even the monochrome e-book reader comes as late as Q3.

This could be an interesting alternative to iPad if it’s fast enough (it looked pretty fast with sensitive touch when Lanci used it), and has options for getting digital content on to it, like books, music, movies, etc. Since it runs Android there should be plenty of apps available if only we had access to the Android MarketPlace on the devices bought in UAE.

All in all I think Acer raised more questions than they answered with this tablet display. Also, it made the tablet the most interesting piece of the event and not what was supposed to be the big thing, the Clear.fi system.
