AT&T Offers Up to $5,000 Reward for Information in Copper Telephone Cable Thefts in East Houston

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Reward Comes in Response to Numerous Thefts of AT&T Copper Cables in Recent Weeks.

AT&T* announced a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the thefts of AT&T copper telephone cables that have occurred in East Houston recently, including fourteen in the 77044 and 77049 zip codes alone. The steady rise in the market price of copper over the last few years has led some people to extreme measures, including stealing copper cables from houses and telephone poles.

AT&T will distribute posters throughout affected area and work with law enforcement agencies in an effort to catch those responsible for the crimes. AT&T urges shop owners, employees and anyone else with information to call 800-807-4205 to begin the investigation process that could lead to the possible reward of up to $5,000.

Tampering with phone lines that the public uses to place emergency telephone calls or to request emergency assistance is a serious crime. In each of the cases, the theft of these copper cables is a State Felony according to the Texas Penal Code, punishable by jail time and fines.

“AT&T takes this matter very seriously,” said Alejandro Olea, Director, AT&T Network Services. “We are working with law enforcement personnel to ensure that those responsible for the crimes are apprehended and punished. We feel the reward will motivate people with information to come forward.”

Employees of AT&T and its affiliates, their family members and law enforcement personnel are not eligible to receive the $5,000 reward. AT&T will solely determine the distribution of the reward, and any disputes over the reward shall be resolved by AT&T in its sole discretion, including identifying those entitled to share the reward, and the division of the monies between two or more persons. Only one reward per person with information leading to an arrest and conviction will be given. Individuals cannot receive additional reward money for multiple tips or convictions. Offer expires December 2010.
