Next generation combined packet data switch and optical platform unveiled

Nokia Siemens Networks simplifies network infrastructure, cuts cost by integrating packet data handling into optical transport platform.

Nokia Siemens Networks unveiled a new platform that simplifies large communications networks while addressing rising demand for more capacity. The next generation packet optical transport solution (P-OTS) combines the intelligence needed to reliably send information where it’s needed with the huge scale and speed of optical fiber communications. This industry first brings closer a truly converged packet and optical network.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ next generation P-OTS has been created by adding packet data handling functionality to the company’s hiT 7300 Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) platform. The result is that traffic can move more efficiently through an operator’s network, rather than needing to be processed by routers at each stage. This allows the network operator to address rising demand for bandwidth intensive applications without having to undertake massive data traffic router capacity expansion. In return valuable router resources can be dedicated to process higher level, value added services.

The next generation P-OTS is achieved through the integration of Multilayer Protocol Label Switching – Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) functionality and protocol agnostic switching that allows the hiT 7300 DWDM platform to handle both packet and circuit-switched traffic with the same efficiency. It combines the scalability of photonic switching with the flexibility of electrical switching capacity from 1.5Tbps (Tera bit per second) to 24Tbps. In addition, the integrated Optical Data Unit (ODU) cross-connect functionality aggregates low speed traffic and efficiently fills high capacity transport channels which means the installed optical network can handle more traffic.

“With internet traffic growing fast and average revenues per subscriber declining, cost per bit is the most pressing issue for service providers,” said Uwe Fischer, head of Optical Networks Product Management at Nokia Siemens Networks. “This combination of MPLS-TP and optical technology allows the most cost efficient transport of data traffic over a DWDM optical transport network. We allow service providers to implement a flexible transport architecture with the agility and scalability necessary to meet the dynamic requirements of their subscribers.”

The benefits of the next generation P-OTS can be maximized with Nokia Siemens Networks’ TransNet network planning tool and managed via the company’s system-wide NetAct network management system. The next generation P-OTS can be deployed by both operators using Nokia Siemens Networks’ existing hiT 7300 platform as well as those building a new optical transport network.
