Taiwan market: No decision yet on release of GSM bands for 4G operation, says NCC

Friday, May 7, 2010

While Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications has unveiled a plan to phase out GSM mobile communication standard in 2017 to make the frequency bands of 900MHz and 1,800MHz available for 4G or other advanced standards, the National Communications Commission (NCC) has noted that whether GSM will retire hinges on market conditions.

GSM is a mobile communication technology standard widely used around the world, and is particularly advantageous in interoperability and roaming service, according to industry sources, adding that currently there are 9.25 million GSM-based 2G subscribers in Taiwan.

NCC thinks it is quite difficult to phase out GSM from the Taiwan mobile communication market, the sources said.

For 4G operation, NCC recommends a 700MHz band which is currently used by the government for military and police purposes, the NCC indicated.
