Highlights from 2009 include the honor of being ranked as "World Technology Supersector Leader" by the widely recognized Dow Jones Sustainability Index, positioning Nokia as number one in sustainability across the entire global technology sector on the basis of a detailed corporate sustainability analysis.
In 2009, Nokia continued to reduce the environmental impact of its mobile devices and operations. Nokia reduced the CO2 emissions of its own facilities by 12 percent, compared with levels in 2006. During 2009, the company also reached its 2012 energy savings target ahead of schedule.
The year had its challenges brought about by the global recession, requiring even more focus and greater efficiencies in our operations. With voluntary measures the company was able to reduce the need for involuntary personnel reductions.
The comprehensive report covers a wide range of areas including ethics and compliance, health and safety, materials management, supply chain management, logistics, the environmental impact of products and services, corporate social investment and various other areas.
The 2009 report follows the guidelines of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a network-based organization that has pioneered the development of the world's most widely used sustainability reporting framework. A third-party GRI Application Level check has confirmed Nokia's self declaration that the report meets the requirements for GRI's Application Level A+, the highest level, indicating the wide extent of reporting.
