Major update for Xperia X10 after Summer

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

In the second half of this year, Sony Ericsson will bring out an update to probably Android 2.1 for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. However, multi-touch will not be part of the update.

At the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson promised that buyers of the device would not have to tranfer to a new mobile phone any time soon because the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 would evolve with the developments. "By using the most recent hardware now and the possibility to update the device with software, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will not quickly antiquate", as says Harold de Kort, Communications Manager Sony Ericsson, at the launch of the device at the end of last year. The Swedish Japanese merger promisted to keep developing the software and possibilities of the phone during the life span of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, due to which the phone will remain topical for quite some time.

A first big development will porobably become the upgrade possibility to Android 2.1. At the moment, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 still operates on the older Android 1.6, but the phone already approaches Android 2.1 concerning functionality. As a standard, Android 1.6 does not support flash and digital zoom at the camera, two features that Sony Ericsson developed herself in Android 1.6. Other 'limitations' in Android 1.6, like the lack of bluetooth 2.1 and Exchange support, were also solved by Sony Ericsson by means of software adjustments. A possible update to Android 2.1 will therefore nog bring along big differences in comparison with the current version of Android.

"Still before the big update in the second half of 2010, Sony Ericsson will distribute some other smaller and bigger updates that will both improve the functionality and the user experience of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10" as says Harold de Kort to Mobile Phone Helpdesk. A very distinctive quote, from which we can derive that some additions can be expected any time soon in the line with the current product portfolio of Sony Ericsson.

Multi-touch
Biggest point of speculation at the moment is the multi-touch functionality that would bring along a possible Android 2.1 update. Multi-touch is an option with which one can zoom in and out with two fingers on the screen. Harold de Kort: "Multi-touch will not be a feature in future updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because the device does not support multi-touch due to her software and hardware configuration. The operation and user experience of the phone will be further improved and Sony Ericsson will come with her own intuitive way of, for example, zooming in and out."

Other options that could possible become available for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 with a possible Android 2.1 update are improvements of the virtual keyboard and the agenda. Furthermore, the internet browser of the Xperia X10 will also support HTML5.

Although Sony Ericssn has to make her own interface available for a higher version of Android, the interface will not chage a lot. Sony Ericsson herself does not make a statement on which version of Android the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will receive in the second half of this year and therefore doesn't confirm that it will concern an Android 2.1 update.
