China Unicom to Expand Its China169 Backbone Network with Huawei Cluster Router

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, announced that it has been chosen by China Unicom to upgrade its China169 backbone network. Huawei’s NE5000E cluster router system will exclusively provide the four new backbone nodes in Chengdu, Xi'an, Chongqing and Wuhan.

To accommodate rapid subscriber and traffic growth, China Unicom seeks to expand and optimize its network, particularly the China169 backbone network, which will be flattened and upgraded to enable more state-of-the-art communication services for China Unicom’s customers. This important project will commence in March 2010 and the upgraded network will be fully operational by June 2010. With this new deployment, the capacity and stability of networks in these four regions will be greatly enhanced and will ease network traffic pressure in Southwest China and Northwest China.

"With Huawei’s cluster router and professional services expertise, the upgrade of this network will support China Unicom’s Broadband Acceleration Strategy and provide the enhanced capacity, flexibility and scalability necessary to address the bandwidth demands of its growing consumer base," said Zha Jun, president of Network, Huawei.

Huawei’s NE5000E 2+2 cluster system has a 2.56 Tb/s port capacity and can be easily upgraded to 200 Tb/s to accommodate future traffic growth. The NE5000E router, specifically designed for energy efficiency, offers the lowest power consumption in the industry. To date, Huawei’s NE5000E core routers and cluster system have been deployed for leading operators worldwide, including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, France Telecom, Philippine Globe, and SingTel. The total shipments of NE5000E core routers and cluster systems have now exceeded 2,000 sets, of which over 50 sets of NE5000E cluster systems were deployed commercially, including the first 5Tb/s 2+4 cluster system deployed in China Telecom Shaanxi province in 2009.
