MediaTek says shipments for handsets to climb by up to 30% in 2010

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

MediaTek has forecast shipments of its handset chips will top 450 million units in 2010, up from around 350 million shipped in 2009. Company president Hsieh Ching-Jiang said 5% of MediaTek's total handset IC shipments in 2010 will likely come from those for 3G handsets and smartphones, compared to less than 2% in 2009.

MediaTek has already shipped six million chips used in TD-SCDMA and WCDMA handsets and smartphones, the company noted.

Handset chips will still be MediaTek's major growth driver in 2010, with on-year shipment growth of 30%, followed by TV and optical storage chips, Hsieh noted.

The company also expects DVD player chips to continue growing in 2010 as it has landed orders from new customers in Japan and Korea.

MediaTek reported revenues of NT$115 billion (US$3.59 billion), net profits of NT$36.71 billion and a net EPS of NT$34.12 for 2009. Its net profits in fourth-quarter 2009 totaled NT$8.75 billion on revenues of NT$29.1 billion and a gross margin of 58.7%. The company expects its revenues to grow 0-5% in the first quarter of 2010, better than earlier expectations of market sources.

Market watchers estimate the company will see revenues increase 15% to NT$132 billion in 2010, with a net EPS of NT$37.
