Consumer Appetite for World Cup TV “On-the-Go” Drives Record Handset Sales for Brazilian Retailer Ponto Frio

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Sao Paulo, Brazil – Ponto Frio, one of the largest consumer electronic retailers in Brazil, and Telegent Systems, the company that makes television mobile, announced continuing demand of analog free-to-air TV handsets. Telegent-enabled mobile TV handsets practically disappeared from the shelves of the retailer in less than one month. In order to take advantage of the product potential for the World Cup, Ponto Frio opted to purchase a new lot of five additional models featuring Telegent mobile TV technology. One in particular, with huge success in sales, is the ZTE N280 cellular touch screen GSM handset.

"Ponto Frio looked ahead of its competitors by offering to the market the best and most up to date technology and design. We have replenished our inventory in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup. We expect to triple our sales in May and June as compared to the same period last year," said Claudia Flores, Buying Manager at Ponto Frio.

Telegent's mobile TV receivers provide consumers with access to the same live programming that they view on conventional TV sets. In 2009, Telegent's mobile TV receivers accounted for more than half of all broadcast TV solutions sold worldwide, according to analyst firm Forward Concepts.

"Leading retailers such as Ponto Frio are playing a significant role in driving widespread availability of TV handsets to Brazilian consumers," said Samuel Sheng, Telegent CEO. "TV handsets provide more options to consumers in how they receive and view television content – particularly for sporting events such as the World Cup."
