Taiwan market: Time is not right for merger of WiMAX operators, says FET chairman

Friday, June 18, 2010

Taiwan's six WiMAX operators may be willing to merge to expand their geographic coverage, but the market is not yet mature for mergers, according to Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) chairman Douglas Hsu.

The six WiMAX operators - three in north Taiwan and three in the south - are at their initial stage of operation and therefore it is not opportune for mergers until they start or are close to making profits, Hsu said at FET's 2010 shareholders meeting on June 15.

Of the three largest mobile telecom carriers in Taiwan, only FET won a WiMAX license and therefore the company is thought to be the most likely among the six WiMAX operators to initiate merger talks, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
