Taiwan market: Android accounts for 10% of smartphone segment

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

The Android platform accounted for 10% of all smartphones sold in the Taiwan market in December 2009, higher than the global average of 4-5% in the same period, according to a survey of retail channels in Taiwan.

Market share for Symbian-platform models in the local market fell from 57% in December 2008 to 43% in December 2009, Windows Mobile from 19% to 16%, and Motorola-brand Linux models from 4% to 0.5%, while iPhone OS rose from 20% to 29%, the data showed.

As more vendors, including Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics (LGE) and Garmin-Asustek are planning to introduce Android phones into Taiwan in 2010, the ratio of Android phones in the local smartphone segment is expected to climb higher than the global average of 15% projected for the year, commented market watchers.
