AT&T to Offer the First Intrinsically Safe, Ruggedized Windows Mobile 6.1 Handset Suited for Industrial Users.

AT&T* announced it is the only carrier to offer the world’s first intrinsically safe-certified smartphone, the Airo Wireless A25is. This rugged mobile device is the first of its kind to be certified to run on AT&T’s wireless network and is capable of supporting AT&T’s suite of line of business mobile applications.

Airo Wireless A25is is designed for people communicating in industries that operate in potentially explosive environments including process and chemical manufacturing, the petrochemical industry, the military, utilities, as well as companies in the pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturing industries.

Announcing the availability of the Airo Wireless A25is on AT&T’s wireless network, Chris Hill, vice president, mobility product management, AT&T Business Solutions said, “The addition of Airo Wireless A25is to AT&T’s portfolio of non-stocked ruggedized mobile devices will help enhance efficiency, connectivity and safety among personnel at sensitive establishments and other industrial work places that operate in extreme or demanding conditions. AT&T is proud to be the world’s first carrier to certify this device for use on its wireless network as it demonstrates our commitment to the rugged enterprise market by consistently offering cutting edge solutions for our business customers.”

According to Airo Wireless, the A25is has undergone intrinsic safety certification testing and approval for UL 913 (North America) and also meets rugged military specifications (MIL-SPEC 810-F/G). It is equipped with multi-functional features including a 2.8-inch touch screen and is just under an inch thick. Airo Wireless A25is is rated to survive a fall of almost 50 inches at least 26 times, be shock-proof across 1,000 miles of transport in a vehicle on shaky terrain, and withstand up to 95 percent humidity for 48 hours and immersion in up to five feet of water for 30 minutes.

The Airo Wireless A25is has several user-friendly features, including a fully integrated GPS receiver, QWERTY touchscreen, light weight battery and sleek body. Other highlights include Bluetooth™ compatibility, Push-to-Talk compatibility, a button for notifications, as well as GPS telematics applications and the ability to support a full line of business applications for job assignment and inventory tracking. The A25is can help to improve return on investment by reducing equipment purchases as it can absorb the functionality of a variety of other equipment into a single convenient handheld unit that can survive in potentially explosive environments.

“AT&T’s broad wireless capability and breadth of mobility applications used on this ruggedized, intrinsically safe device can help to improve communications and make industrial operations more efficient. The A25is device was designed based on extensive customer input to ensure it has the right mix of form factor, features and durability to maximize worker productivity and also withstand potential exposure to water, dirt and harsh chemicals, heat and cold and general tough use from bumps, drops and vibration,” said Steve Sharabura, VP of Corporate Development, Airo Wireless.
