iPhone 4.0 screen details leaked

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

The next-generation iPhone will have an all new display with huge improvements on resolution and readability, according to a DigiTimes report.

The Taipei-based tech newspaper has been pumping anonymous sources within the Taiwanese components industry (the most likely source of the new iPhone’s innards) for details about the new phone’s display. It sounds pretty special to us.

Compared to the latest crop of AMOLED Android phones, the iPhone’s 48ox320 screen was looking a bit tired and grainy but DigiTimes’ source claims that the new phone will have a screen running at a brilliant 960×640. This is better than even the most high-end of the Androids, which can stretch to 854×480. The screen will also use a technique known as Fringe Field Switching to allow much wider viewing angles and improve visibility in bright sunlight. This last bit will be of particular not to anyone who has tried to use an AMOLED screen outdoors.

The screen will also be around 33% thinner than on previous models, apparently as a way of allowing a bigger battery to get around increased power usage.
