Subscribers can now enjoy personalized high-definition services at home and on the go.

TOKYO, Japan – The Mobile Devices and Home business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced that KDDI, a major mobile operator in Japan, has deployed Motorola's innovative high-definition (HD) IPTV set-top (model VIP2060 ), providing enhanced personal media experiences to its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) subscribers. The VIP2060 will be launched in Japan on 2 June as "HD-STB" for KDDI's "au Hikari" service, which supports 1 Gbps ultra high-speed optical fiber broadband connections.

The Motorola VIP2060 is a flexible, IPTV set-top with a built-in 500 GB HDD to support DVR functionality. Its standard quad tuner enables users to watch and record IPTV programs provided by KDDI as well as terrestrial and satellite (BS/110CS) broadcast services via a connected external antenna, with support for both Japanese broadcasting standards — ISDB-T and ISDB-S. With Motorola's VIP2060, subscribers get a comprehensive package of advanced media capabilities, including simultaneous recording, time-shifted viewing, delayed playback, trick play DVR capabilities and transcoding of MPEG-2 & MPEG-4 AVC video.

"It's our mission to provide our customers with an advanced, media-rich entertainment lifestyle." said Masahiro Inoue, Associate Senior Vice President, General Manager, Mobile Technology Sector, KDDI. "By working with Motorola, a global leader in developing and delivering innovative video solutions, we are able to provide significant value to our customers, including great IPTV HD and on-demand experiences as well as advanced time-shifting and mobility services. The launch of "HD-STB" marks a key milestone in further advancing our Fixed Mobile Broadcasting Convergence (FMBC) service, enabled by au BOX."

The Motorola VIP2060 is a platform to enable KDDI's "au BOX", providing video on demand capabilities and music capabilities that allow au mobile users to transfer content between the "HD-STB" and their mobile devices. In addition, the VIP2060 includes an electronic program guide (EPG) for KDDI's IPTV programming, as well as terrestrial and satellite BS/110CS broadcasted signals, that enables users to navigate and view channels, free-word search for programs, and schedule recordings of their favorite shows.

"Motorola is focused on delivering solutions that help connect people to their content and community, thereby creating compelling consumer experiences as well as new revenue-generating applications for service providers." said John Burke, senior vice president, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. "We are excited to be supporting KDDI, a long-time business partner of Motorola's, in delivering new services. By selecting our VIP Series IPTV set-tops, KDDI will benefit from Motorola's fifty years of video leadership and field-proven expertise."
