XO Communications selects Nokia Siemens Networks to expand optical network capacity

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

To meet the increasing bandwidth and low-latency requirements of businesses and carriers, XO Communications is deploying Nokia Siemens Networks’ industry-leading* 40 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution.

As part of a multi-year agreement, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply its hiT 7300 DWDM 40 Gbps platform to provide a high-capacity, cost-efficient and scalable transport system. The platform’s high degree of modularity will enable XO Communications to respond timely to changes in traffic demand. Also, the hiT 7300 is based on a common hardware platform, which saves staff training time and OPEX, and reduces the number of spare parts needed to be stocked. To accommodate the continued growth in data traffic on the XO network, the hiT 7300 platform provides network flexibility and capacity that can be extended to 80x40G to meet future requirements.

”Nokia Siemens Networks’ 40G DWDM solution is optimized for the increased bandwidth and faster connectivity needs of today’s networks,” said Randy Nicklas, Chief Technology Officer, XO Communications. “The hiT 7300 platform provides a smooth evolution path to 100G, the next step in optical transport technology and the next step for the XO network.”

“We are delivering XO Communications a next-generation network that will enable it to offer cutting-edge services at lower costs,” said Sue Spradley, head of the North America region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Additionally, this agreement reinforces our leadership in the 40G market.”

In addition to the hiT 7300, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply its leading Transport Network Management System (TNMS) to optimize the network’s operations through centralized control and supervision. The agreement also includes Nokia Siemens Networks’ professional services for network implementation and care.
