AT&T Strengthens Mobile Coverage in Casey County

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

New Cell Sites Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Wireless Network.

As part of its continuing network investment to support a growing demand for mobile devices and services, AT&T* today announced the activation of a new cell site in Casey County that will enhance coverage for area residents and businesses.

The new cell site is located 22 miles west of Somerset and will boost coverage along Hwy. 127. The site will also provide enhanced coverage to the residents of Liberty and is one part of AT&T’s ongoing efforts to drive innovation and extend its mobile network. It is also part of our ongoing investment to build the networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable AT&T's customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.

“The expansion of wireless network capacity will be a real plus for Casey County,” said Sen. Vernie McGaha. “This is good news for economic development and for area residents who depend on their wireless devices for conducting business, gathering information and staying connected with family and friends.”

AT&T recently unveiled its Kentucky wireless network plans for 2010, which include the addition of more than 40 new cell sites and the upgrade of nearly 300 additional cell sites to 3G throughout the state. This builds on AT&T’s 2009 wireless investment, during which it added 50 new cell sites in Kentucky and upgraded more than 80 existing sites to 3G. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s total capital investment in its Kentucky wireless and wireline networks was nearly $500 million. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T’s wireless network investment in Kentucky was nearly $125 million.

The planned wireless network enhancement strategy is part of AT&T’s 2010 wireline and wireless capital investment, which is expected to be in the $18 billion to $19 billion range, an increase of between 5 and 10 percent over 2009. This plan includes an increase of about $2 billion in capital expenditures for wireless and backhaul related to its wireless network.

“Investing and expanding our wireless network in both rural and urban areas across Kentucky is a priority for us in 2010," said Mary Pat Regan, president, AT&T Kentucky. “As part of the Casey County community, we’re always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage and our investment in the local wireless network is just one way to accomplish this.”

AT&T’s mobile network is based on the Global System for Mobile (GSM) standard, the most open and widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T offers data roaming in more than 190 countries, as well as voice calling in more than 220 countries.

“We continue to work aggressively to improve our network infrastructure throughout Kentucky to improve the quality of our services,” said Jim Thorpe, vice president and general manager for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets in Kentucky and Tennessee. “We’re working to make this possible by adding new wireless coverage and offering exciting products to help our customers stay connected with their world, at home and on the go.”
